so i walk in a gas station today b/c i need a new lighter, and the guy CARDS me! he's like, can i see your ID.. and i just kinda looked at him wierd.. then i was like you hafta be 18 just to buy a lighter?? and he says, no actually you have to be 21 to buy a lighter. or matches.

so i walked out, went to another gas station and they didn't say a word when i bought it.

but tell me.. is this true? are you really supposed to be 21 to buy a LIGHTER? if so, that's the first time i've ever been carded for it.. or ever even heard of it. and if so, that is absolutely ridiculous.. first of all.. how is it gonna be where you can buy cigarettes at 18.. but i'm sorry, you can't buy a lighter to light them with..
and lighters have uses beside smoking.
what if i'm 17 and i have candles in my room i want to light?

i think that mother ****er just didn't feel like selling me a lighter for some reason or another.

Listen to this story guys, it's just freaky:

Me and a buddy were going to go for a smoke, I wanted to show him this ravine (he isn't the forest-chilling kinda guy, so I figured he'd get a kick out of it) and we went there with a mini-parachute to use to smoke. We get there and of course no one has a lighter so we go to a convenience store near my house to buy one.

He's in the car running idle right outside when I walk in and go to get a lighter. She asked me what kind and I'm like 'whatever' and after about a dozen or so questions we narrowed it down to a white on blue (instead of the blue and white) Toronto Maple Leafs lighter, the large kind

Finally I go to buy it and she goes 'I.D.' and I'm standing there like wtf? I go here all the time, buy Rizlas and other stuff and am obviously over 19. But I left mine in my girlfriends purse so I'm like:

"Oh I don't have it, didn't bring it on me because I'm not driving. But I bought a lighter last week from you, remember?"

"Oh, I'm sorry but I can't sell you it without a I.D."

And I'm totally like 'holy ****, all I wanna do is get high and walk around in the forest and check the trees and plants growing and how much bigger they've gotten and this **** turns into a TREK'

"Alright listen, I don't have my license and you know I'm not under 19, but my buddy driving has his ID, do you want me to get him to come in and buy it?!"

"Yes, we need an I.D."

So I go out and he's in the car (still idling) and he asked what was taking so long and I told him. He was like WTF is that about? and started laughing.

So he goes in and the lady goes "the lighter?" and he says yeah and she takes out the SAME lighter I was going to buy and he buys it and leaves.

She didn't ask him for I.D.



lol she trusted my word enough to believe my friend wasn't under 19 yet not when I said I forgot mine. Either she likes messing with me, or damn...

You have to be 18 to buy a lighter in most states, but very few places will card you. In general, the same age requirement on tobacco also applies to lighters, pipes, rolling papers and all that other stuff. Because, you know, it's gonna be used for tobacco

At the head shop around where I live you can buy whatever you want, and they wont card you, but this is also in the flea market where you can buy switch blades and other knives and stuff and they don't card you. And it's also not a gas station.

I never understood this. I mean, fire was one of mankind's first discoveries- I don't think they were looking for a way to light their cigarettes. Honestly, I use my lighter more for completely legal uses(lighting candles, providing a quick burst of light for say, finding the keyhole when I come home at night, etc.) than I do for lighting tobacco or marijuana. Stupid laws.

Same thing happened to me I was on vacation and was tryin to buy a butane lighter to go with my new bong. I went to one of those wings places that they have all over the beaches, tried to buy one and they asked for my I.D. What the hell? So I walked 10 feet over to a headshop and bought it for less that at the other place.

Most of the time, I get carded when I try to buy a lighter.

It's retarded because they aren't illegal, yet some places just pretend they are.

They're not ILLEGAL, but they're ILLEGAL TO BE SOLD TO MINORS. You have to be 18. Most stores don't enforce it, because there's not going to be someone coming around fining the store for selling you a lighter like they might if they sold a pack of cigarettes to a kid. Even grocery stores are technically supposed to ask for ID when you buy a box of kitchen matches.
