I was at a party that involved the consumption of off-topic drinks. The party got busted by a cop. He had everyone there (like 15 people) show him their wallets, purse, and ID. Three people there were 21 or over and I had not been drinking. Also, when he came no one had a beer or drink in their hand. He then confiscated all the fakes. I was at a party on a college campus. Here are my questions: 1) Does the cop have the right to make me show him everything in my wallet? For example: I take out my ID and show it to him and then he makes me go through all my pictures and other cards and crap I keep in my wallet. Is this legal? 2) Does the cop have the right to search the rooms (it was in a suite with a common room and three bedrooms)? He first came into the common room without permission and then asked permission to look into the bedrooms. Oh, he also covered the peep-hole so we couldnt see who was out there. This cop was a real dick and he got another call on his radio after having us dump the off-topics about some suspicios guy trying to get into some building and he pretty much ran out of the room and kept saying "i have to go, i have to go". So he left with all the fake IDs but didnt really punish us beyond that. Note: The only reason he found the fake ID's was because he made everyone show the contents of their wallets/purses/whatevers. He also searched a room and found a chalked ID in a drawer. Note: Everytime I said fake ID, I meant that it had been "altered" as the cop put it. For example, it had been written on with colored pencil to make the year 1985 look like the year 1980. Let me know what you think and could some cops please respond to this? PS - I had a bunch of weed and a pipe in a drawer in a desk (which was not searched thank goodness). EDIT: If you need more information, let me know what you need and I will post it but I think I put down all the important stuff.

Did he just walk in or did someone answer the door? Were you guys playing loud music? Since it is on the college campus you have a lower expectation of privacy. Did he go in the rooms after he asked if he could? He probably could searched the rooms if he got an RA or Security. I dont know exactly why anyone would be upset with the outcome of this story which could have ended up alot worse. There were minors(12/15) drinking on campus which is illegal in itself and then there are the three people over 21 providing the alcohol which is also illegal so pretty much everyone there was committing some sort of crime. I honestly dont think there was anything wrong with this search. I really dont get the tape over the peephole thing though..... ![]()

Someone opened the door a crack and he came in. We were playing music but it was pretty quiet, it definatly wasnt being blasted. Yes, he did go into the rooms after asking permission but he did not open drawers or anything, just searched things that were visible. There was no RA there, just this one police guy. I'm not saying I'm unhappy with the outcome, I'm just trying to learn more about my rights. There wasn't tape over the peep-hole, he put his hand up against it in hopes we would open the door for him (which we did). There was no proof that anyone under 21 had been drinking, he didn't do any type of sobriety tests or anything, and I think I go to a wet campus, so drinking on campus is legal if over 21. In addition to my other 2 questions, here is another: 3) Is it legal for the over 21+ year olds to be drinking with minors present? Because this is what it looked like, at least in my opinion, since no one was holding any cups or bottles except for the 21+ people.

And was this a local LEO from the city, or a college security cop? Correct me if I'm wrong; I'm betting it was Campus Security.

| I remember my freshman year at Arizona State, the cops came to the door when my roomate, a friend, and I were all making hash. We weren't smoking, but when he came to the door, he held his hand over the peep hole. I asked who it was, he said "Parker." I don't know a Parker, so I said, "Parker who?" He said, "Paker, your local deputy sheriff." What an ass But he did compliment us on the room, which was decorated in stoner gear, you couldn't even see the walls anymore because there were so many posters all over the place. He also said he didn't agree with the drug laws (because we got to talking while he was handcuffing my roomate who had a gram of shake on him). Thankfully he didn't find the half-pound of bud we had, heh, he even picked up two jars that were emerald green and had bud floating in them (we were making hash with alcohol), my friend told him it was shoe polish when he asked ![]()

Whew, HL, sounds like you squeaked by! I'll have to tell you sometime about my "almost busted at the concert" experience. I will neverunderstand the rush some people get from tormenting others...

it was University Police Department, so yeah, it sounds like it was the school's cop. Higher Logic: When he said he was PD what did you do, just open the door to him? Did you hide all your stuff?

If you are at SUNY Albany, I think you can probably download a copy of your Students' Right and Responsibilities, or else get one at an admin building. I went to UMass, and I know our student guide had our rights spelled out to a T about who's allowed where, who needs permission, etc.
