Default Closing in on Complete Decriminaliztion?

With Oakland recently opening a few coffee smoke shops, where high grade marijuana is legally available for adults 21 and over to enjoy a nice joint with a cup a joe. The question is raised in my head, Are we closing in on complete decriminaliztion in the US? Important officials in California are meeting in San Fran this week to discuss discriminization and maybe legalization all together. A District Attorney in the bay area is even supporting decriminilization, and i'm not talking about this fake decriminilization that we see in a few states now that treat marijuana like a traffic ticket. Im talking about the decriminalization like they have in Canada where the police don't even acknowledge marijuana smokers, they ignore them all together. Where there are smoke shops on the corner in every city. The President of NORML said he believes that legalization could be coming soon, and that we are winning the battle. So what do you guys think? Is it possible that the country could finally be wising up? Is the day close???

Perhaps a link or two to support your statement? While I am all for decrimilization, and the City of Oakland is more liberal than most (thanks to Mayor Moonbeam), the Feds are a factor and local governments are beholden to the monies that the Feds dole out.

As an aside, I doubt that legalization will change my smoking habits, and I would not flaunt my smoking in front of any stangers, let alone a Police Officer. First impressions are lasting . . .

I Googled "Oakland California marijuana law" and saw nothing about 21+ being able to smoke cannabis.

That is because you can't.... the first poster is probably talking about measure Z, which was a really pretty piece of legislation but, unfortunately, didn't change the situation too much. If only...

You want links? Ok heres the article about the Oakland smoke shops

http://www.mapinc.org/drugnews/v05/n563/a04.html?999

Here's a link to a good website that posts hundreds of marijauna articles daily

http://www.mapinc.org/find?SID=999&DE=Medium

and here are some excerpts from the article on Oakland

Two doors down is the Bulldog Cafe -- named after one of the legendary coffeeshops in Amsterdam that successfully challenged the Netherlands' pot prohibition policies in the mid-1970s.

Here, recreational users can order from a menu of cannabis products, sit and enjoy a cappuccino and a smoke.

Prices are about twice what they are in Vancouver -- an eighth of an ounce of good stinky sold for $40 US -- about $48 Cdn-- less potent weed for $30 US -- about $36 Cdn -- plus state sales tax, of course.

"It's called goo," Richard Lee, the owner, told me holding up the crystal-encrusted bud of marijuana that smelled of citrus and sandalwood. "As good as any of your B.C. Bud."

From his wheelchair in a small room behind an appropriate Dutch door, he dispensed the pot in small glassine bags and the edibles packaged in appropriately satirical wrappings -- Kiefkat, Indo' Joy, Stoners, Reefers... There was chocolate milk infused with THC ( the most active psychotropic chemical in marijuana ) as well as cheesecakes laced with pot.

I dont know what you're talkin about with that proposition Z thing but this is legit. They have clubs in Oakland just like in British Columbia and Amsterdam. As long as your over 21 you can enter these clubs and legally smoke high grade marijuana without fear of police interference. It is an experiment that they decided to try in Oakland to legalize marijauna

To clear things up, I dont think marijuana will be legalized. The government has fed so much false information to the public that it would almost be impossible. Did anyone hear about the local government near Boston that prevented scientists from testing marijauna after they already had permission from Senate? Another reason why legaliztion is almost impossible in our country is because the number of people imprisoned on marijuana related charges. There would be millions of appeals which would flood the courts and be too much of a headache for them to deal with. Another reason is that so many law enforcement agents would be out of a job. Hundreds of thousands of people are arrested each year. Cops would be out of jobs becuase of the reduced crime, and judges and prison guards would also be out a job. I'm still wishing though, I just don't see it happening... I just wanted to see what everyone else thought.
