Updated 4/14/2005 10:44 AM, The fact we understand, that there is a law is understandable. However I left on April 23 rd, THEY WEREN'T ENFORCING THE LAW IN THE USA WHEN I LEFT, BUT MEXICO WAS ON MY RETURN TRIP. I Had a lighter in the X-Ray machine when I left Chicago on the 23rd. I went through customs into Cabo without the red light. On my return being unaware of the change they wanted the lighter out of the check in luggage too. That's my point we here in the USA think that we know everything. We don't, I had knives in my check in for filleting fish. That wasn't a problem. I also had 2 boxes of stick matches in my carry on luggage. That's my Point! ![]()

I wasn't referring to your situation whatsoever....this was aimed at the person who basically said I was making things up when I said the enforcement of the ban was well publicized by the pres before the ban went into effect. I simply posted one of MANY articles I located that stated the ban was going into effect that appeared in major publications. The truth is, it WAS well publicized, despite a few people who missed the coverage. I didnt pull anything out of thin air....I simply stated what i knew to be correct.

Long before 9/11 it was illegal to have lighters in your checked luggage because it violates a long-standing rule against having volatile substances in your checked luggage. This has nothing to do with national security. It's a fire safety rule. Luggage holds are not pressurized. In a low-pressure environment volatile substances tend to gas off, mix with air, and be an explosion waiting to happen if a spark occurs.

Yes. All they will do is confiscate your lighter, just like they did twice with my keychain knife when I inadvertantly forgot to remove it and pack it in my luggage. They even let you mail it back to yourself if you want, which is what I did. That is, of course, if you're not being an as_whole and give TSA a hard time or reason to suspect you for something else. I average two trips per month, been through just about every damn airport in the US. As long as you act normal and don't do stupid things, TSA is not a problem. And, when they do find things like a small knife (and now a lighter), all you have to do is act surprised and ignorant of the rules. I've even had a wooden golf tee confiscated from my briefcase on a random search. No big deal. Let them have it. Like someone said, what's the big deal? You can still carry matches. BTW, I've never had a Bic lighter set the machine off, either. But they have found it when I was randomly pulled off to the side and "wanded".
