No the problem here is that people who smoke cannabis don't fit into "one" category. It's not like we're talking about clicks here or trying to pinpoint a bunch of "goths." Since so many different types of people smoke--educated, uneducated, successful, dropouts, lazy, motivated, young, old--it's not really easy to say "peers" in this kind of situation. Different socioeconomic classes, different races, different everything. Though you could generalize all users, I can't stick up for everyone and what they do. It's like saying I should police everyone that drinks. A task that I cannot even fathom.

Forget it. My effort to offer a helpful suggestion is being ignored in favor of excuses and defensiveness.

I'm done here.

I was hoping to hear what his vision was of how this "police your peers" program was supposed to work and who the other offenders within community might be.

Or, maybe, the original post was targeted for all the gggggggggggggggggggggggggggggangstas [sorry - I left my body for a second there] and gangsta wannabes who frequent these forums.

NS took his post and went home! What a hoot!

As I remember it, he talked about some teenagers who were tagging marijuana signs and how they were hurting the legalization movement. He recommended that marijuana users should police their peers.

Regardless of the tagging I think he makes a genuine point. If we see one of our pot-smoking peers acting in a way that hurts the legalization movement, we should ask them to stop.

This involves pretty much any irresponsible use or portrayal of the drug.

Now whether or not you see tagging and graffiti as negative portrayal is a completely different matter. What's negative portrayal to one group of people is positive to another group.

I agree completely. While most of us are responsible, otherwise law abiding citizerns, there are pot smokers out there that do nothing but promote the negative stoner sterotypes, and push any efforts towards legalization back even further. Wether it be smoking in irresponsibly or attemptng to "help" the movement with such radical rethoric that it immediately gets wrtitten off as the work of a "nut job", we all know or at least see people like this. AS long as we ignore the problems within our particular pportion of the sub- or counterculture, our efforts are basically being wasted. Its hard to show that the majority of us are responsible citizens, when a lot of people's only exposure to the "legalization movement" is seeing a watertower or overpass with a big pot leaf and the words "legalize it". I know its impossible to fully controil such things, but ignoring the problems isnt helping anyone either.

The last I heard, we still have vestiges of free speech in this country. People are free to express themselves as they choose unless they are trying to directly foment violence.

Using your criteria, two thirds of the posts on this website should be censored.

No, thats not at all what I'm saying. What I meant to imply was that our freedom of speech could be put to beter use than it sometimes is. What does more good.....handing out flyers informing the public of the many medicinal uses of marijuana....or spraypainiting public property with a giant potleaf? I'm all for freedom of speech. Its something I believe in more than most anything. However, when as a group, cannabis users want to push foreward the efforts towards legalization, policing our own isn't a bad idea. The key to winning is to improve people's perception of pot smokers as group, and if we want any respect, self policing is a good idea. Irresponsible behavior makes us all look bad
