That's the opposite of the Supreme Court ruling. If a K-9 unit is on-hand in the course of a traffic stop, an alert is grounds for a search. The precedent set is that a sniff is not a search in the meaning of the term under the Fourth Amendment because no reasonable person would have expectations of privacy in the air outside their vehicle. The officer cannot detain you beyond the time of a normal traffic stop in order to call in a K-9 unit.

On the basis of the USSP ruling, the Arkansas Supreme Court last week reversed the conviction of a man who was pulled over and detained while a K-9 unit was called in. They found that there was no reasonable suspicion that a crime had been committed that would justify bringing in the dog.

Sniffing for drugs is not something that most police dogs are trained to do. It's a specialty training. Most police dogs are trained to apprehend and hold suspects, and to protect their partners.

If the dog in the story had been a drug sniffer he would have had your ass.

I am a Vet (not a veteran) and I would like to add the following:

While humans are served by about 5 million olfactory receptors, dogs have more than 250 million, in an area of nasal epithelium some 50 times larger.
A correspondingly greater proportion of the dogs’ brain is devoted to processing the signals received from these receptor cells.

I am still not sure if they can smell one or two grams of weed in a (closed?) bottle filled with detergent.

Dogs olfactory capabilities are now used even in medicine: dogs can be trained to distinguish patients with bladder cancer on the basis of urine odor.

Don't carry more than a quarter of shreaded bud in a dry plastic flask. When you feel the heat just turn it up and chew, swallow. If it's shreaded/fine enough it will easily all come out and no evidence to prosecute. Dennis Hopper is an actor and not a good one at that.

I'd not follow his advice unless traveling. Maybe that is what he ment. You have to think along the lines of "What is the fastest method of getting my grass into my stomach". If you think it's digging it out of a heat sealed plastic bag then I will come visit you while in jail. That goes for wrapping it in foil too. That **** will go everywhere when you try to rip it out. Just buy a plastic flask and cut your weed up until it's really fine. No worries

I am lost again. Is it the only way to avoid jail in the US, while serenely driving, to stick weeds (or buds) in your ass or stomach? How paranoid are you guys? Is your looking delinquent? I don't know. Get rid of awful tattoos, nose earrings, jail marks, learn to speak politely, understand that cops are humans too. What problem is it carrying one or two joints while driving.

You've obviously never spent any time behind bars. There's a world of difference between being on the Inside and being on the Outside.

No. We live here and have experience with how things work. If you want some idea of the draconian nature of US marijuana laws, take a look at the NORML US map and click on a state to see its laws. The pull-down menu will get you to a list of federal laws.


In this country, all it takes to be profiled is the wrong age, the wrong color skin, the wrong clothes, an old car, out-of-state plates, or long hair. I agree that the best approach is to remain invisible, but that doesn't always work.

MAybe not....but jail cells do exist, and given the choice, I'd ratehr live on the outside of one rather than the inside

While not having seen the inside of a jail cell I'm certain it's no place for me. If traveling to see family or friends and know I will have to be high to enjoy myself then I take precautions. Simple as that. It (marijuana) is my prefered medicine and sadly not recognized by the storm troopers of the fascist states of america
