I've been a lurker here for a long time, but today I got caught for possession of marijuana and have a court date.

I was at a park parking lot when a sheriff car rolled up. They took the weed (around 1g) as 'evidence' and made me shatter my bubbler. I got a citation to appear in court.

I'm wondering what's going to happen to me. I go to court in August, and I'm wondering what I'm supposed to do when I get there. Do I plead guilty, pay a fine and all is well? With that new court order saying marijuana is illegal, whether you have it prescribed to you or not, I'm all the more confused

You should really contact a lawyer in your area who can explain to you the local laws that are in your area for pot possesion.

Talk to a lawyer. If you don't already have one, look in the phone book. Best of luck to you. I'm glad I live in Canada where you would never get a court date over a gram.

I have a feeling you are underage, and if so you may want to bring this up with your parents. They may have a family lawyer so you won't have to just call some random name in the phone book.

i got busted for minor posession... got a ticket and a court date and i was going to handle it myself and all that, doesnt work. if youre a minor they will send a letter to your house addressed to your parents describing the incident and circumstances. since youre in CA i assume that you have decrim, you can go to norml.org and check out the laws in your state. ~1 gram, youre in no trouble. just pay the fine and consider yourself unlucky. dont forget to write your representatives.

i got my ticket in 95... havent even had so much as a traffic ticket since, dont forget to be safe.

1) The sheriff is not a federal law enforcement official and you are not appearing in federal court. If you have a valid perscription it should still get you off the hook.

2) Under CA law you'll pay a fine, or at the worst get some probation.

Show up, say "Yup, I did it", and take whatever the judge hands you. The only alternative is to get a lawyer, but you'll end up paying more in legal fees then you would have in fines had you not gotten a lawyer.

I am not a minor. I'm 20.

Should the question come up if I smoked weed, what should I say? I'd rather not get tested and etc. I'm completely fine with admitting everything as long as it comes down to only a fine/maybe probation. Thanks again guys.

you will get a ticket, may even get it thrown out, but you will most likely just pay your fine and court costs and never hear anything else out of it. dont lie to the judge, tell him you did it, they respect that a lot more than someone who goes in with a weird story. these guys are human lie detectors. let us know how it turns out, but mainly, JUST DONT SWEAT IT. they see much much worse.

If this is your first offense, be sincere. Explain to the judge that you were at the park relaxing and getting away from it all after a hard day at work. Unless the sheriff testifies he saw you or smelled you smoking, do not volunteer if you were or not. Don't volunteer anything. Tell the the judge that you have been worried about this and since the bust you have read up on the dangers of pot and driving. Point out how it impairs your angle of vision and reflexes. Tell him you never realized this until now and that you won't carry pot around with you again. It's likely he'll reduce the charges and threaten to come down hard on you if you get caught again. And he will if you get caught again. I would also not smoke for two weeks and eat plenty of healthy foods before the court date. You'll appear more alert and "straight" and have turned over a new new leaf. Once it's over, scram and party down but not at the park.
