| hey any officers here, I have a question. I know that all airports now have dogs there at the gates, but my question is, the dogs that they have there, are they explosive dogs? or are they drug dogs?? or do dogs usually smell both? I know its not smart to transport grass at a time of increased national security like this, and I almost certainly won't. Even if the dogs were only explosive dogs, I wouldn't want to be searched, because I know that is on the rise too. Just out of cursiosity though. |

| They are going to search the hell out of you anyway. Everyone is getting extensive searches and questioning. Not a good idea if you like your freedom ![]()

| Generally speaking, most dogs are not trained for both narcotics and explosives. There are a few out there, but it's not common. One of the reasons is additional training time. Everything you want the dog to do, you have to devote training time to it. The more tasks he is to perform, the more time it takes. And for detection, the dog needs to have regularly documented training on the scent. One of the biggest reasons is response. The majority of drug dogs are "active response" dogs. That means when they smell the drug, they go after it, try to dig it out. This is not a good thing for an explosive dog to do for obvious reasons. You can train a drug dog for a "passive" or "sit" response. In that, they just sit when they smell the scent. Some handlers prefer that. I personally prefer the active response dogs.

| Don't count on that. Drug dogs are very prevelant at airports, usually about 3-4 to every explosive dog. Just because a narc dog can't signal a bomb doesn't mean they still can't have him there to bite. |

| Right now I'd bet Drug dogs and even fruit and food dogs are deployed to deter people. |

| Everytime I read something about dogs at airports catching somebody with drugs - they have large amounts on them. What about carrying a very small amount? Can dogs smell that? If they do, what will happen to you? | |
