| I was wondering that if hypothetically, marijuana was legalized tomorrow, what kind of taxation would the US government employ? Can anyone versed in marijuana politics comment or speculate on this? Would marijuana be dirt cheap, or only slightly more affordable? I imagine that they would tax a pack of joints to roughly the price of 2 or 3 packs of cigarettes or something. Mods, I know we're not supposed to be discussing the marketing of marijuana, but I thought it was ok since this is a hypothetical question. |

| Since marijuana is so easy to grow (it will grow almost anywhere), any taxes that raised the price unreasonably would result in home growers growing their own. This is why tax collection could be a problem, I'd think. They have some margin, because big business (for example, the tobacco companies) can produce it very cheap through mass production. Of course, they could always make it so you require a license to grow it, and then only give the license to large companies such as tobacco companies and prevents individuals and/or small businesses from legally growing it.

| After a few years of legal bud I doubt many individuals would bother to grow it, except for enthusiasts and small farmers. There's too much work involved, and I think most would rather pay a little more than spend the amount of time and money required for cultivation. Few people grow their own tobacco. |

| I think it would be simple to implement a taxation and regulation system for the distribution of marijuana. Well, not simple, but it most certainly wouldn't pose that many significant problems. Like another member said here, not many people grow their own tobacco. That's true, but tobacco is much harder to grow than marijuana, in general, and wouldn't be as easy to make the final now marketed product. It would be generally much cheaper, I think, for marijuana if it were legalized(is that within posting guidelines?) A better example would be alcohol for an example of what were talking about. There are micro breweries every where, let alone being able to make alcohol in your basement. Yet people still prefer, largely, to purchase their alcohol from the regulated system we have in place right now. It wouldn't be hard to tax at all. It would be grown commercially, like something like corn, and would be taxed easily in that context. I think it would be reasonable for personal growers not pay tax on it, as it would be equivalent to paying taxes on a tomato from a tomato plant in your window! But their wouldn't be a huge amount of personal growers, as was touched upon, not a lot of people would bother taking the time to grow. Although it would be a lot smarter than paying for it ![]()

| I just think that marijuana prohibition is hurting our economy. Right now we pay absurd prices for a black market product that could generate revenue through taxes for federal and local governments. Instead of putting this revenue in the hands of the government, it is going to illegal dealers nationwide who launder it and don't declare it as income. I believe the latest figure is that 15 million Americans admit to smoking weed. If all of those people (and that's just the people who admitted it) went out and bought a pack of joints for $20, and lets say the government gets 25% of the revenue through taxes, then there's an extra cool 75 million for our schools, social security, etc. And that's just from sales tax! Plus in another few weeks those 15 million people will need to re-up their stash The government could make a killing selling weed! |
