| cops are allowed to lie to you in the process of tricking you into admitting that you've done something illegal... and once you've admitted it, you're screwed, and the fact that they've lied to you will make absolutely *no* difference whatsoever. here's an example: two cops responded to my previous post in this thread - one said that my information was sound, the other poked all kinds of holes in it. which one should we believe? answer: *NEITHER OF THEM*!!! DON'T TRUST COPS!!! they're allowed to lie to you, and they *will* lie to you in order to facilitate their job... and their job is to bust you for doing stuff that the law says you shouldn't be doing, regardless of whether that law is just or not. i *never* talk to cops without my lawyer present, and i do so under protest even then. | |

| Try this instead: One cop gave you a general answer, one addressed specific points by giving you cautionary advice. Being paranoid is your perogative, but don't call me a liar in the process. If you can prove something, step up. If you can't..........well, unsupported opinions are worth what you pay for them. |

Both came from a LEO's perspective and both are valid. I chose to focus on the positive comments of your post (and link), while Niteshift focused on the negative aspects.

| nighshift, slate, everyone else... my points were as follows: 1) cops are allowed to lie to you, and they will suffer no consequences for such lying... unlike what would happen to someone who is *not* a cop if they lied under similar circumstances. 2) a cop's job is to enforce the law. a cop's job is *not* to enforce his or her personal interpretation of the law, and a cop's job is *not* to forget about enforcing laws with which he or she does not agree. this means that if any of us admits to breaking a law, it is nightshift's and slate's job to make sure, to the best of their ability, that the consequences of such a violation are carried out. nightshift and slate get *paid* to do this... it is not a voluntary thing. if they didn't think it was appropriate, they would be doing something else. given those two points, i think i am entirely justified in my stance that to trust a cop, particularly as a member of the discussion fora at marijuana.com, is not a particularly intelligent thing to do, and i am completely within my legal rights, as is everyone else, to refuse to talk to a cop without my lawyer present. | |

" True, we can lie to a person that is being interrogated, where's the crime? "2) a cop's job is to enforce the law. a cop's job is *not* to enforce his or her personal interpretation of the law, and a cop's job is *not* to forget about enforcing laws with which he or she does not agree." Not exactly true. Spirit of Law vs Letter of the Law. There's a lot of room for interpretation. "this means that if any of us admits to breaking a law, it is nightshift's and slate's job to make sure, to the best of their ability.......etc..etc..." delux, are you paranoid or what? given those two points, i think i am entirely justified in my stance that to trust a cop.....etc..etc... That you are, but is your attorney with you everytime you post? I think you are eluding to the fact that I (and Nitshift) are participating in this forum for the sole reason of gathering intelligence on the horrible MJ smokers of the world. Uh, don't ya think we'd just read the BB instead of participating? I'm sure there is someone from the DEA/FBI/NSA..etc that has the job of monitoring this BB if that makes you feel any better.

| deluxe: "cops are allowed to lie to you, and they will suffer no consequences for such lying... unlike what would happen to someone who is *not* a cop if they lied under similar circumstances." That's a pretty simple concept. Your attorney is allowed to lie in court too, why? He's not the one on trail (Notice that the attorney is NOT sworn in). I'm not the one suspected in a crime, so why would lying carry a penalty? Besides, the court says it's ok. Until you become a judge, this is all just opinion on your part. " a cop's job is to enforce the law. " Really? You've actually read my job description? Funny how you could do my job descrition in a single line, but it takes my dept. almost 2 pages. What I'm trying to say is that you don't know what my job entails, you're just guessing. "a cop's job is *not* to enforce his or her personal interpretation of the law, and a cop's job is *not* to forget about enforcing laws with which he or she does not agree. " Would you really want our COURT RECOGNIZED discretion taken away? Would you want me to have to write you a ticket at 1 mph over the limit or arrest you because you spit on the sidewalk? Or are you just trying to spread distrust and ill-will? "this means that if any of us admits to breaking a law, it is nightshift's and slate's job to make sure, to the best of their ability, that the consequences of such a violation are carried out." I don't arrest only those who admit. Just thought I'd mention that. Likewise, I've had people admit to crimes that were, in fact, lying about their participation. You could be lying. You could actually be a DEA agent, hoping to gather intelligence on here and you're mad that we're here, sticking our nose in. Maybe you are a criminal defense attorney who wants to keep people ignorant or the real laws so they will make mistakes and get arrested, thus needing your services. Can you prove that those allegations are wrong? "i am completely within my legal rights, as is everyone else, to refuse to talk to a cop without my lawyer present." Gee, does that mean you won't answer my post? |
