Stickyboo, my lady friend, take a gander at the "Flying High" thread - 52 pages of travel information and misinformation. Basically "drug dogs" are not used in security searches for domestic travel, however many airports have "patrol dogs" as they have miles of fence line and open space to protect. Learn the difference for your own peace of mind - search for K9Copper's posts and it is explained. Cheers!

Default Canine detection in apartment house?

I'm considering moving into an apartment in a building that has posted outside a sign saying it's patrolled by a k-9 detection service. I live in Vancouver, BC, where there are many grow-ops, and I assume that's what they're patrolling for. The dogs don't come into apartments, but are in the hallway outside. I contacted the property rental company and they told me that if the dog alerts them, they immediately evict the person.

So where does that leave a casual smoker? How careful must I be? Where would the safest place be to hide my stash- the freezer?

I know this topic's been covered a lot, but I can't find anything that specifically deals with this situation. Anyone have any experience with this, or ideas?

A dog's nose is extremely sensitive, and if you are smoking in your apartment, or possibly even inn possession of a decent amount, ita quite possible the dog could detect it. I wouldn't feel comfortable smoking in such a place if I knew the pssibly of eviction was constantly hanging over my head. The legalities seem shakey on this, but again, I'm not familiar in the least with Canadian laws on the matter

My advice would be for you to find some other place to rent. I wouldn't live at a place where the land lords were playing "pot police".

We call that anecdotal evidence, and it is not reliable. The dog may have missed your brother's weed but it could have been a number of factors, none of which was the blanket. Dogs do not smell like we humans do, so to apply our experience to their ability is not appropriate. You cannot hide, cover, or overwhelm the sense of smell for a dog; to suggest that you can is a disservice to others here who might try it and get busted. With all due respect, my friend, you brother had some dumb luck that is no indication of the efficacy of dogs.

Sinus infections, mouth infections, and doggy breath issues are sometimes an explaination - but hiding it under another dogs blanket is not stopping the mutt from smelling the weed. He smells the female dog and the MJ.
While I'm also skeptical, never underestimate the ability of a female to provide a distraction...especially when your primary sense is smell. Perhaps it's possible the dog did smell the MJ but was too interested in the female's scent to show his masters. Maybe he was just horny?

I'm half-kidding, of course. I'm more interested in knowing why the person involved bothered to check the dog's gender.

I live in a Vancouver apartment as well. You don't have to worry about personals busting you with the amount of pot heads we have here. There was questions at the strata meetings. We were told by the cops that communal living sometimes involves what other people do. (ex. tobacco use, marijuana use, cooking smells.)

I'm not sure if dogs can smell quantity.

Thanks for the info chooch008. By personals, do you mean a private canine detection outfit?

I wonder about the legality of this as well. What's to stop a malicious person from contaminating any other apartment in the building? And what happens if someone visits a building and happens to be holding something on them, unbeknownst to the person living there?

If I smoked outside the building and kept it airtight in my freezer, would that help evade detection?

Again, thanks for any advice.

Now last year I was a senior, and one day when I drove to school (only about 200 people went to my school if that makes a difference and only about 20 drive) and the night before me and my friends hot boxed it out with a few blunts, I drive a '99 Eclipse GSX, I also had an oz in the console and the drug dog didn't hit on my car at all that I know of because they didn't come tell me anything. Now before anybody says its never a good idea to bring bud to school, I usually park off campus when I drive but I was late or something so I didn't. Maybe the dogs were a hoax because I live in a small town and they never hit on anything and might be there just to scare everybody, OR hey were legit and hit on my car but they just never said anything to me for some reason?

Something else to consider with the dog detection capabilities. Detection dogs can only work where the substance to be detected is rare.

I recently heard about a US school inspection that was canceled because a small quantity of powdered leaf and stem was dumped on the entrance walkway. Since that spread the scent everywhere via every shoe, the detection dog was rendered completely useless. The dog alerted on everything and the inspection was canceled.

Food for thought anyway.
