| I'm not 100% sure what you mean, but if you are asking if you can synthetically reproduce marijuana, or aspects of marijuana, then yes you can. For example, Marinol (dronabinol) is synthetic THC. There are other synthetic aspects of marijuana as well, but with THC being the most "mainstream" chemicals, it's probably the chemical you want to talk about.

| Many herbs are sold OTC. They're not considered to be "drugs". I think the current colloquialism is "nutraceuticals". I wonder why marijuana wouldn't fall into the same category?

| I am trying to understand why the DEA won't accept marijuana for its medicinal value. They say it does not meet all five criteria for medical use: * The drug's chemistry is known and reproducible; * There are adequate safety studies; * There are adequate and well-controlled studies proving efficacy; * The drug is accepted by qualified experts; and * The scientific evidence is widely available. Which of these criteria does Marijuana fail to meet? |

| Marijuana is not a "drug" in the conventional sense: it's a natural plant product, neither manufactured in a lab nor extracted and purified from other substances. GW, the manufacturer of Sativex, has gotten around that my making a marijuana extract that can be adjusted for standardized levels of component chemicals. I'm not familiar with how the FDA treats herbs. I can't think of any other controlled medications that are natural plant products. Marijuana is more like tea, coffee, and tobacco than cocaine, morphine, SSRIs, or even aspirin. |
