I'd actually question this. I don't think most people really care one way or the other, but if asked they'd say no. I'd be willing to bet that if "I don't care" were an option, you wouldn't have nearly the number of people answering "no".

The people who are really die hard anti-legalization simply won't vote for somebody who supports it and somebody who supports it isn't going to gain too many votes because of it. Nobody has anything to gain from a "Soft on Drugs" image and in really tight races it almost always gaurantees a loss. It's just not going to happen until the legalization movement wants it more than the stubborn movement against it.

Actually, I don't question it because in matters of public policy, "I don't care" isn't an answer: you either are for legalization or you aren't.

That was an option:

36% for legalization
60% against legalization
4% no opinion

Gallup poll, October 15, 2005

You learn something new every day I guess. Thanks for the link.

Just out of curiosity, do you know how they decided who was going to be part of the Half Samples?

I also remember a poll (I believe it was conducted by CNN within the last two years) that said that while two thirds of the public were against legalization, 60% of people polled said they wouldn't be against decriminilization. That tells me that people definitely accept the fact that people shouldn't go to jail for it, but still just don't know enough about how it would be regulated and controlled if it was completely legalized. The first Nevada initiative didn't say how it would be regulated, and people saw that as meaning that all the hippies would just be smoking around schools and growing pot in thier basements. Thats why it failed until the new more restricted initiative was created.

Either way, I think the way we'll eventually win is by getting one or two states to legalize, which would then cause the general public to finally start paying attention.

I believe that if a few states legalize pot then the national system will become politically unsustainable.
This is what I mean. If we can get whole states to legalize it (and provide the means for its regulation) then others will see that it isn't as "taboo" as they thought, and others will follow. One state at a time is the only way to change the Federal law on this.
