| My question is fairly simple. What constitutes probable cause for a LEO to obtain a search warrant? Does increased power consumption give probable cause? How about posting on these (and similar forums)? Thanks | |

| and Welcome to Marijuana.com. Hope that you enjoy your stay and keep on contributing... Probable cause is one of the subjects that comes up on this time and time again. My first recommendation to you is to go here and do a search for probable cause. Daniel

| Thank you for the kind welcome, and although I am new to this forum, I am familiar with the search function. ![]() I spent a few hours searching, but didn't really find a good answer, so I thought I would post. Actually I am a lot more comfortable safely lurking. ![]() So is there a good answer? I would really like to know if it possible to obtain a search warrant solely based on electric power consumption? If so, what is the determining factor (e.g. % increase, total power consumed). Once again, thanks. | |

| Well... This ones a bit on the tricky side, high power bills is a big tipoff that somethings going on, but that alone isnt enough to obtain a warrant, They need some more evidence like if your power bills have a rather obvious pattern that is similar in other growing situations. If they have a reasonable suspicion that a crime is being committed, they'll probally look other signs to get enough evidence to get to establish probable cause for a judge to sign a warrarnt.

| A lot of times your computer uses more watts tan a standard grow light. Unless you are using one or more 1k light, I woudl really not worry. I have five computers with .3k watts running almost 24/7. They haven't searched me for marijuana growing yet. i don't think they woudl, just because so many people use a LOT of electricity and do not grow. Grow lights are by far not the most power consuming thig you can have in your home. In my opinion it woudl be an emabarassment for them to search a home just on power use. If they search you its because they got other evidence. I don't even think it woudl arouse suspicion just because of all the other things it could be, other than grow lights. They'd have to watch a LOT of people. | |

| Eventually I will have a 250W running 24/7, and 2-1000W running 12/12. It will show a pattern, i.e. the 2-1000W lights coming on and staying on for 12 hours on a daily basis, that could be a problem. If it would just make the law suspicious, that would be fine. I think I can make sure there is nothing else out of the ordinary that would give them enough eveidence for a search warrant. I could be growing orchids or something else, couldn't I? | |
