| My parents have been threatening to search my car (I keep my stuff in there so it's not in THEIR house, it's in a car with MY name on the title, parked on the street. Can they do this? I think it's BS... |

| Are you legally an adult?

| No, but I bought the car myself, and my brother (who is 18) and I are jointly (hehehehe) on the title. |

| I'm guessing your brother is on the title since he's over 18? Which would make him the one with the most solid legal standing. The short answer is that they can't enter someone elses property. If your brother is an adult, then he is the property owner. If both of you are under 18, then they may have legal grounds, depending on your states particular laws. The real question though is this: Are you prepared to prosecute your parents for burglary? |

| Just keep the car locked and never leave your keys lieing around... that is unless they have a set ( which I dont really see any reason for them too have ). If they cant get in then they can't search it.

| that is unless his parents know how to pick a lock...., but yes if you are a minor your rents can search your car...but if your brother "owns" it, then they have no legal right. and to Niteshift i would most deff be willing to sue my parents if the broke into my car and took stuff...though suing them for taking marijuana will get me no where but jail.

My brother is on the title AND SO AM I. And if my parents are ready to go in my car without my permission, then I am ready to prosecute them for doing so. And yes, they have emergency keys, but I'm thinking I'll get those back... | |

| In most states, it doesn't matter if you're on the title. If you're a minor, your parents have greater control of what you consider your property. You brother is the one who is the one with solid standing. I hear you guys saying "yeah, I'll prosecute". I have to tell you, if you really mean that, you have my sympathy. I hope my relationship with my parents never gets that bad. |

| I don't see any of these situations where the police are involved ending happily, for anyone. And if you involve the police, wouldn't your parents just turn you in as well? If there really is something in the car, it probably wouldn't take any more than your parents tipping off the police for them to be allowed to search it. This sounds like a nasty situation that can be avoided. |
