do you have the right to ask for another officer to be present before you have to do anything?

You can ask, but they don't have to do it.

Sometimes, there simply isn't another officer available unless it's urgent. For example: If I stop you and make that request, the only officers near us may be at a burglary call. They can't leave it just because you want another cop. Now, if I call and tell them I need back-up, everything gets dropped and they will come.

I don't think they will bring another officer just because you want. They may get you a lawyer if you demand that though. Peace-

I can't remember ever seeing a lawyer respond to a traffic stop. I'm sure it's happened somewhere, but I've never heard of it.

Just for clarification: Your right to an attorney does NOT mean I have to call one that second or bring them to that location.

You could always try to call your lawyer on the cell phone, but you would probaly have to pay for his gas.

In many cases, an officer will not allow you to use a cell phone during the encounter for several reasons.

Depending on the circumstances, I will not allow you to use one. You'll be asked poitely the first time, told the second time and, if the third time is required, you'll get your phone back when the encounter is done.

Yes, it's legal.

Let me put it this way............a couple of the reasons relate DIRECTLY to my safety.

In SOME instances, I encourage people to leave their phone on if they like and let the person on the other end listen to the stop. In fact, I've had people claim to be recording it on the other end. Fine with me, I'm recording it on my end.

But if certain circumstances are present, I will forbid use of the phone. It's completely legal. It's not oppressive, since you have no legal right to use a telephone and my safety will win that contest every time.
