| So my friend and I were just about to see a movie, when my friend decided he wanted to go smoke a joint in the corner of the theatre parking lot. We went over to the corner, where there were a few trees and bushes. It was relatively dark and unobvious. We were there for about 10 seconds when a car approched us, stopped and turned on its high-beams. The car was completely unmarked. So we kind of approched the car, because we were cornered in a dark area and this anonymous car approched us. We wanted to know what's up. The passenger cop exits and tells us to put our hands on the hood of the car. We comply. By this time the driver has exited and is talking to my friend separately. My cop asks if I have anything in my pockets that he should no about. I said no. He then tells me to empty all of my pockets. I hesitate and ask him "Is there a reason for all this?" (basically asking him what the "resonable and probably grounds" are for the search) and he replies "of course there's a reason, we see you two here in a dark corner, what are we supposed to think?" i say "I don't know" and he says "what do you think?" and I repeated "i don't know." (he was yelling a lot, making me look like a complete idiot) So anyways, he makes me empty my pockets, searches my hat, shoes, clothes, everything except my body caveties basically. He finds nothing except for a rolling machine and a tin with papers and about 6 baggies. He takes our ID's and calls my parents. He tells my mom everything, including accusing me of trafficing because of the empty baggies. Now, my friend over there being searched by his cop has found 1 joint and about 0.5 grams of bud. After the searches the cop gives us both tickets for 70$ CAN, for "prohibited activity on premises" under the "trespass to property act." (even though I had nothing "illegal on my person) After the tickets, my friend asks "So why did u guys come over here in the first place?" (basically asking why they searched us again) and he replies "oh, we've been having people jumping this fence here to take a shortcut to the other street." hmmm, so he changed his story. This was my first encounter with cops. my cop not only humiliated me the most he could, he called me an "f*ckin idiot" many times. he bullied me because i questioned his actions. I tried to stand up for my rights and he punished me for this (I got much worse treatment than my friend). I was absolutely disgusted with this cops attitude and actions. I'm going to file a formal complaint against him, and I'll probably fight my 70$ ticket, although I'm contemplating just paying it, after all its not that much. I'm going to check if there have been any reports of people jumping that fence, because I highly doubt that he was telling the truth. These cops relied on us being completely ignorant of the law (17 y/o's). If i refused search and accused the grounds for a search unreasonable i have no idea what would have happened. he took my tin, he said I'm getting off easy, and instructed us to plead guilty with explanation. Then they left, and we went and saw the movie. Before this incident I would always tell people off who called cops pigs. I had a great respect for them and their jobs. I thought that they get a bad rap and have one of the hardest jobs out there. Not any more. This experience has left a bad taste in my mouth obviously, and I don't know if I'll ever like cops again. Too bad. I know it's unfortunate, but that's the way it is. Good luck in trying to contradict your stereotype with pieces of **** like this around. |

| Well, it couldn't have really been a lot worse because I wasn't doing anything wrong. I didn't even have anything illegal on me. Yes, my friend could have been charged for possession, so he's happy. No i'm not in a lot of trouble and I guess I'm grateful for that, but my point was more about the cop's conduct. |

| This bothers me because I'm also in Ontario. Would you be able to tell me what region it was (ie. peel, halton, metro)? I know many cops in these areas (believe it or not, i have a "close" family tie into law enforcement, how close im not going to tell...), and i'd like to know which region are being asses. However, the fact that your friend didn't get charged for possession does show that they were leniant.

| Dude, I know exactly how you feel. I had something EXTREMELY similar to your experience happen to me just recently (cop hassling me for no apparent reason), and i'm still pissed about it. It's good to hear you're aware of your rights and are willing to stand up for them. FIGHT THAT TICKET!!!! In the future just try to smoke in a less populated place. | |

| filing a complaint against a cop won't do anything... i had a friend do that on a cop that used unnecessary force... nothing happened. They can call you whatever names they want... i've heard cops say some pretty horrible things to people... they are allowed to. Cops taught me that respect is demanded and not earned. -ko |

| "This experience has left a bad taste in my mouth obviously, and I don't know if I'll ever like cops again." Hmmm....perhaps those cops had a bad experience with young people hanging out in dark corners at night. Perhaps they had a bad experience with some stoners and that is why they were a little more rude with you than they should have been. Or perhaps because of your own fear and confusion over the situation your perception of their behavior is distorted. That is the problem when people hold something against an entire group of people because of one or two bad experiences. You are saying that your friend didn't even get charged with possession but you want to file a complaint? You might want to take a step away from the situation and try and view the whole thing objectively. I know...easier said than done. I am sure the entire situation was (in an understatement) no fun but I honestly don't see that you would have any real grounds for complaint. If anything you have reason to be grateful that this turned out to be a minor gripe about less than courteous cops.
