Default Airports, security, marijuana revisited...

Just took a trip to Las Vegas. I wasn't going to go the strip, and I didn't really know anybody around... So, I brought weed and a pipe with me. Yep, it goes against things that I have said before, but I did it.

I brought 2 pieces of carry on. One laptop bag/backpack that contained all my clothes and toiletry articles and one "lunch box" type bag that contained 3 sets of binoculars, a GPS unit and other weird astronomy stuff that only a geek would have.

Items carried:

A small stone pipe (weed smell strong) went into a pocket of a packed pair of pants.

Small baggie (between about 1/8 to 1/4) folded up nicely in my wallet along with other papers.

All my change, watch, wedding band and any other metal objects went into clothing bag (the one with the pipe).

I go through security. The "geek" stuff goes right through, no problem. I didn't beep. Wallet stayed in my pocket. ID was conviently located in my other pocket, just in case I was asked for it, w/o fishing it out of my wallet.

Bag with clothing goes through... They take alot of time with it, and decide that it needs to be hand checked. I take a few deep breaths while I watch the guy go through it. He takes out 2 lighters, a handful of change, my watch, my ring all my clothes etc. This seems to take forever, and I am a bit nervous. He puts everything back in and puts it back through the xray machine. Says that he needs to do it to see what is "different". Bag goes through again, he looks in the bag once more, says something to another screener (in somali) laughs and I get my bag back. Round one over and I don't know for sure if he actually found/saw the pipe, but I think that he did but didn't care.

Round 2.

I get to the gate to wait for the flight. I am aware of random screens at the gate and I plan for the worst. MJ comes out of my wallet and into a newspaper that I was looking at. Newspaper was folded up in a book. I figure that if I am called for a random check, I can just go up without the book, and be fine.

Well, they call for boarding.... I rate pre-boarding and stand up (with the book in my hand) and start for the aircraft. Security man friendly asks if he can search me. I say "Ummm.... Okay.... "I look for wife (who knows nothing about me having anything on me) and she smiles and goes aboard while I am to be searched.

Man brings out my electronic bag, goes through it. Askes me what the GPS is. Other man has taken the wand out and starts to go up and down looking for metal objects on me. (book, paper and dope still in my hand) Other person tells me that I can place the book in the little basket provided. I do.... Clothing bag is searched (half heartedly), I am told that I can go.

Book goes back into my hand (never even glanced at), I leave smartly and grab my boarding pass from the first security guy that asked me to be searched. I board the flight and nothing else happens.

Shrug... I don't know. I don't ever recommend anybody do this unless they have some time and can afford to be bailed out.

But... That is what I did and had no problems except for really bad luck that was offset with good luck.

If I did it again, I'd do a few things differently. I'd not put all the metal objects in the one bag. This impeaded the xray machine and drew the search. I'd also make sure that I didn't look so anxious to board the plane, and also be sure that there were already searches going on. Prior to this flight, I had thought that people were selected and called by name for searches. This was not the case in my flight. I figure that since I was one of the first to stand to board and perhaps I looked nervous somehow, I was picked. Lower visibility would have probably prevented the 2nd search.

Again... I don't recommend this, but that is how I did it.

I flew back from Vegas this morning's red-eye flight. Put the leftover weed in wallet, pipe in pocket (same thing) and never had any problem on return trip.

I don't know if the first guy saw the pipe. (I assume he may have) I know that the second search could not have revealed it (very, very loose search).

Perhaps I am taking the airport security thing a bit lightly but I just don't know. I am getting more and more convinced that they just don't really care about stoners.

Interesting story. I would question whether or not it was worth the risk of being busted simply so I could smoke some pot once I got in Vegas. Laws are strict around here, and it would be a MAJOR hassle, might even cause you to miss your flight/be arrested. I don't think it's too hard to sneak small things like that in, though. Mostly they're looking for weapons or LARGE amounts of drugs. Looking normal is 3/4ths of getting away with it. Just be calm and collected, and look like the average white guy... that's what I've always done. Just look innocent!

I would question whether or not it was worth the risk of being busted simply so I could smoke some pot once I got in Vegas.

I don't think that it is worth the risk. Half of me wanted to get caught to see what would happen. Perhaps it is a bit twisted, but I felt that I had a long weekend, bail money and I could afford an attorney.

Laws are strict around here, and it would be a MAJOR hassle, might even cause you to miss your flight/be arrested.

I wasn't worried at all after I made it on the flight. But, I would probably not go round trip with the goods. This was pretty cocky and pushing it quite a bit.

The whole thing was pretty foolish in retrospect.

I went out there to be in the desert and relax. The mj was one of the necessary components to make the trip worth it.

I suppose in my truth, it was worth the risk at the time. I wonder if I would still feel that way if I were to have gotten busted? Probably not. Takes a lot for me to learn.

I'm sure the pipe showed up on the xray machine...they were probably looking for it, but since they couldn't find it decided to give up. who knows.

anyway, very entertaining story...it had me in suspense (will they let him on the plane???)

I went to Europe and it was a total of 6 flights there and back. Me and my bag were only searched once, on the flight back, by some Arab guy, figures. I wasnt bringing anything illegal, but it still pisses me off. He searchs my bag, sees the blanket I stole from the previous flight, probably saw the 2 packs of matchs I got from 2 hotels in europe, doesnt give a **** about either. Then gets his wand, searchs me, asks me to take off my shoes, runs them through the x-ray, I give him a disgusted look, he gives them back, I move on. Then when I was boarding the plane I was watching all the random searched people were all old and white, that really makes me feel safe, wich is the only reason for these stupid searchs. When I fly again and they ask me "Can I search your bag?" I'm gonna straight up say "NO!" Id like to see what these people say and do. Me and my friend were talking, and he said "I think searchs just give up more liberty, I dont think we need them, I dont want them, some guy pulls out a box cutter on the plane and 30 people pull out there .45 and tell his ass to drop the box cutter, think about those trade towers, all we needed was 1 innocent guy with a gun on each flight to put an end to those bastards and saves thousands of lives." Makes me think. Makes me sick. Peace-

I give him a disgusted look,

why?

Then when I was boarding the plane I was watching all the random searched people were all old and white, that really makes me feel safe,

I dunno... You think of McVeigh, Mr Kazinski, John Walker, Richard Reid. Humm... pretty much white. A bit judgemental perhaps?

"I think searchs just give up more liberty,

at the cost of lives? Do you fall into the security vs liberty argument?

a box cutter on the plane and 30 people pull out there .45 and tell his ass to drop the box cutter,

Though I applaud the way that it would be taken care of and can find no fault in it, don't you think that if all those people had guns, the terrorists would have planned for that? Perhaps they would be armed better?

all we needed was 1 innocent guy with a gun on each flight to put an end to those bastards and saves thousands of lives." Makes me think. Makes me sick. Peace-

If worms had machine guns, birds wouldn't fu*k with them would they? You be sick about it.

But, besides that...

Who are you going to arm, Rambo? A bunch of passengers tried to stop the one aircraft, it ended up crashing in PA; do you think one with a gun could had done any better?

The difference between the PA crash and them flying into buildings was awareness by the passengers. It was not one passenger with a gun that stopped things from happening. It was that the passengers knew about the WTC and decided that it wouldn't happen to them. Security had nothing to do with it. And the people still died. Rambo ain't the answer.

I am very glad about the security at airports. (rant about security that I decided to delete; insert here) Though I feel that they are not doing the job, I am glad.

Biggest point that I wanted to make with this thread...

Me, a little stoner can bring in some dope into Vegas (BTW, the next terrorist threat). Don't you think that other things can be brought on a flight? Wouldn't it make you nervous to know that a person like me has the ability to go through all the checks and still carry a substance that is illegal? I didn't even really plan it. MY BAGS WERE GONE THROUGH TWICE!!! WTF??? I just can't say that security is too tight.

I'll shut up now...

They would laugh at you while you missed your flight.

"Me and my friend were talking, and he said "I think searchs just give up more liberty,"

Then you and your friend need to find out what liberty actually is.

Flying on a plane is not a right. It is not a civil liberty. In making the choice to fly, you in essence agree to play by the rules of the airline, the airport, the FAA and anyone else that's involved.

There is no liberty issue here, you are choosing to put yourself in the airport and under those rules. Just like when you choose to get a drivers license, you subject yourself to rules that non-drivers don't have to abide by.

Short answer: If you don't want to play by their rules, don't fly.

Default Give me liberty, or give me death

I'd just assume put myself in harm's way than give up my civil liberties for safety.
