Hi, I am torn. My mom caught me smoking weed and told me about if I get caught all the bad things that are going to happen. One thing she mentioned that is the only thing I really couldn't get over is that she said if I get caught by the police that it could affect getting into a good college. I was wondering what the truth is about this, because even though I am a frequent smoker I still get excellent grades and my schooling is a lot more important to me than smoking weed.

Sadly your mom is right. When you fill out a college app it asks if you have ever been convicted of a crime other than a small traffic offense. If you say yes none of the good colleges will accept you for the most part. That is how they weed out the first level of applicants. Now some states dismiss the charge when you complete probation but i some applications ask if you have ever pleaded guilty or nolo conesento (i know i butchered that spelling) to a crime. I am glad i did not get caught until i got to college or else i might not be here

This sucks. I am going to look into the legality further, but I think this may be a temperary end to me smoking marijuana. I am going to think about it. I don't know anyone locally who has ever gotten busted, but I'm worried. At minimum from now on I am only smoking at my home, never in public.

Good start. A few of my friends who are seniors in high school just got busted about 2 weeks ago. Both of them are pretty good students that would have no problem getting into a decent college but they MIGHT have to go to a community college and transfer. It sucks that weed can hinder what college you get into. Just be careful. The main way not to get busted with weed is not to have it in your possession. Have your friend buy it and pay them to smoke with you (or get it for free) It may seem really dick but if something happens and police get involved they will most likely confess to the bag being theirs and you will be let off the hook. That is why i got busted. I bought a big bag of weed, smoked people up cops came in the room and i had to take the rap for the bag everyone else that was smoking walked away scott free.

No possession=no possession charge

I have to butt in here and tell you kids a thing or two.

We have what is known as the Teenage Trifecta. Read the posts here about young men getting busted and there are always three factors involved - Young Male Adults, In a Vehicle or Public Place, and having Marijuana. Reality Check: A group of young men just really stick out in their car or in the park, and if they are having a party - everybody knows. They blame the cops but the fact is that they have no clue how much attention they get from their general behavior. It is part of growing up, getting a clue.

So as to the question about MJ and College - I suggest getting busted is a good test for college admissions. Consider the young men who smoke weed but do not get busted - I offer that these men avoided it by making good choices in association, timing and location - they are college material and should suffer the academic system well enough to graduate. There is a time and place to smoke weed and these young men (never busted) apparently know the right time and place.

If you think you are all that and a bag of chips; you flaunt your smoking MJ publicly because it makes you look cool and different - meanwhile praying for some failure in police procedure or constitutional issue that will save you - then you are not likely a good candidate for a college degree. You will not work with the system.

Thanks for the responces. Just to clarify wen i said smokng ing public i meant in the woods by my house or a bench on the biketrail where nobody goes, places like that. I dontnwalk down my street hitting a peice.

I'm not picking on you personally, but you are missing the definition of "public".

It means when you smoke out in the woods or on the bike trail, you are in public view and have no expectation of privacy. Some hot-head can phone in a complaint and the police have authority to confront you. You will never guess who might complain - some sensitive birdwatcher or bikenut a half mile away - but you do not enjoy certain rights outside of your home.

You may not walk down your street hitting the Pipe, but would you hang with a couple of friends in public park smoking a joint? Have you ever went for a cruise with friends who were packing some bowls in the car? How about some bong-hits on the tailgate in the old school parking lot?

You, and most young men here, can seriously control the chance of getting busted by practicing a few simple rules when they partake. It is easy to avoid being caught - you just have to avoid the teenage trifecta.

Maybe I'm wrong. Again.

not necessarily. I few months ago i was sitting in a car with two friends, one had a quarter on him, i had a bowl on me and the other kid had nothing. Nothing. no lighters no anything. However, he still got processed with the fingerprints, mugshots, and handcuffs and such. He is now on 3 months informal probation, has 40 hrs community service, and once a week drug education classes.

What was the charge? Paraphernalia? Thats a legal charge.

But if you are in a state that has no laws against being high, and you smoked a joint then a cop can't really give you anything.

Never have paraphernalia in public, and don't smoke in public.



The most hilarious thing is that... I got caught in a nearly isolated place, and my friend smokes 3 times a day in the middle of the dorm yard. The dorm consists of 5 buildings and they all surround the yard. He does in plain view in front of 1000 windows and hasn't been busted, ticketed, or warned for anything in his life. Its hilarious.

Kids who don't give a damn tend to get away with things like that.

If you read the post more carefully you would see that he said one of his friends had a quarter, which it sounds like all three of them were charged with.

EVERY state has a law against being high, pal. Obviously to be high, you had to have possessed marijuana at one point, which is illegal....see where I'm going with this?

You also don't seem to realize that in addition to this, a cop could easily place you in protective custody. Getting PC'ed will not amount to criminal charges, but I am assuming you don't want the hassle.

Why would you make such a far-fetched statement? Your friend sounds extremely lucky, if anything. It is not as if he is an expert at "hiding in plain sight".
