| Deet has been known to kill some people, so I'd assume it's probably not too safe on dogs. So be careful with your deet, stoners. ![]() |

| DEET is used as a mosquito repellent because it temporarily neutralizes the a mosquito's olfactory glands (their sense of smell) DEET's interaction with the olfactory system on other insects/animals is very different depending on the animal in question. It's possible that coating something with DEET could reduce the chance of a dog smelling it, but who knows. It is also possible that distracting smells could be used. For example, hide the weed inside a package of hot dogs. I would like some input on how effective this would be. The problem is that the dog would alert on the package, which could result in an officer tearing it apart completely just in case. Or it could have the effect of the canine operator just thinking the dog is alerting on the meat smell. Any smell which actually repels the dog will cause much unwanted attention.

| Regarding distracting odors, such as food: There is a difference between a narcotics detection K9 showing "interest" in an odor (such as sniffing hot dogs) and "alerting" to the presence of drugs. When a narcotics detection K9 finds drug odor, it is trained to give a very specific response. It is trained to ONLY give that response when it locates drug odor. So, if you have a package of hot dogs, the K9 may show some interest in it because it likes hot dogs, but it will not give the specific drug odor response. If it gives the specific desired response, that means there are drugs there, not just any odor of interest. We also train on a frequent basis using a variety of masking agents and distracting odors (food, air fresheners, coffee, perfume, etc.). |
