| Is there a smell that just repels dogs? Something K-9s would not want to smell? Something legal (not a pepper spray). I think we need a centralized K-9 thread because questions arise all the time. |

| Besides pepper spray the only thing I've seen that repels dogs is the urine of an alpha wolf, supposing you could get your hands on any. It might be that the dog this worked on was not bold in personality, and simply submitted without investigating. Personally though I wouldn't advocate using repellents, a dog whimpering and trying to get away from you might draw more attention that you care for. |

| I have heard the wolf urine myth before, but it is just that: a myth. Police K9s are by selection dominant alpha types. When my K9 encounters urine from another dog or animal, he is not repelled by it. If anything, he is drawn to it, and he is likely to urinate on top of it to establish his dominance and territory. The only agents that could potentially disturb a detection K9 would be hazardous chemical agents that poison the dog. Using those would likely contaminate your drugs with hazardous chemicals, and they would result in not only the drugs being found, but potential felony charges for interfering or injuring a police dog. |

Several other distraction methods were used, other dogs, a cooked steak, urine of a bitch in heat etc... The dog always was only distract for a brief moment, except for the wolf urine. For whatever reason the dog wanted nothing to do with it.

| How the hell do you get urine of an alpha dog/wolf? I thought alpha was dominant behavior, and not some hereditary thing... maybe high testosterone in urine? |

![]() I really don't know what makes the alpha's urine so different from any other wolf, or any other male dog for that matter. I suppose since alpha males are the only males in the pack allowed to mate it may be a testosterone factor like you mentioned.

| I assume that it's the same thing as when a big guy meets a bigger guy, right? Since I don't know what a dog thinks or feel's, it's kinda hard to say, but there is a smell to a wild animal as compared to a tame one. It comes from the diet of a lot or meat. They are after all predators, and hunt in packs to chase and pull down animals twice their size. Mayhaps the domestic canine can smell the death and violence associated with a wild predator, and is just wee bit intimidated....... ![]() I have walked right up to dogs that were supposed to be killers and just made friends as quick as could be. I don't think the dog is afraid of me like a predator, I think he can sense my good vibes......... ![]() I love my dog. A chocolate lab named "Yoshi" with a big boned look. She is the dominant female around the neighborhood. She's already run three dogs down the street.......... She weighs in at about 90 pounds and is a mawler............Her and Fang hate each other...... ![]() Some Where In Ded Land..............

sounds like my friends dog only its small around 50 pounds and sheered the bolts from a small lamp that was mounted to the brick around the grill, scales any fence, and runs hellishly fast.....we just call her the anti-christ but ya nothing can realy repel a dog without getting the handlers attention so its best to just keep it quadruple bagged or more, tha inside an airtight glass jar with tape around the seal, inside of another jar with tape around it, that should keep the dogs away, and make you look a little sketch

| How about something that turns off his smeller without him knowing it? ![]() Years ago, a study was done of different covering agents for hunters to use to confuse or attract deer. Also, the different soaps and things of that nature that were used to cover up a humans smell. One interesting thing found out was that the main ingredient in mosquito and bug repellent was a chemical compound commonly known as "Deet", slang for it's long chemical name. The Deet was found in some way to neutralize the animals ability to smell....... ![]() There was no reaction from the animals to smells of a human presence, even down wind. The animal wasn't hurt, but the deet seemed to shut down the animals ability to smell. Of course I've never done this to a dog, but I wonder what the results would be. I wouldn't want to provoke any kind of reaction from the dog, as Phuzz says, it would be a dead giveaway, but what if you could turn him off for a few minutes? ![]() Some Where In Ded Land............ ![]() |
