| Is there a smell that just repels dogs? Something K-9s would not want to smell? Something legal (not a pepper spray). I think we need a centralized K-9 thread because questions arise all the time. |

| Besides pepper spray the only thing I've seen that repels dogs is the urine of an alpha wolf, supposing you could get your hands on any. It might be that the dog this worked on was not bold in personality, and simply submitted without investigating. Personally though I wouldn't advocate using repellents, a dog whimpering and trying to get away from you might draw more attention that you care for. |

| I have heard the wolf urine myth before, but it is just that: a myth. Police K9s are by selection dominant alpha types. When my K9 encounters urine from another dog or animal, he is not repelled by it. If anything, he is drawn to it, and he is likely to urinate on top of it to establish his dominance and territory. The only agents that could potentially disturb a detection K9 would be hazardous chemical agents that poison the dog. Using those would likely contaminate your drugs with hazardous chemicals, and they would result in not only the drugs being found, but potential felony charges for interfering or injuring a police dog. |

Several other distraction methods were used, other dogs, a cooked steak, urine of a bitch in heat etc... The dog always was only distract for a brief moment, except for the wolf urine. For whatever reason the dog wanted nothing to do with it.

| How the hell do you get urine of an alpha dog/wolf? I thought alpha was dominant behavior, and not some hereditary thing... maybe high testosterone in urine? |

![]() I really don't know what makes the alpha's urine so different from any other wolf, or any other male dog for that matter. I suppose since alpha males are the only males in the pack allowed to mate it may be a testosterone factor like you mentioned.

| Deet has been known to kill some people, so I'd assume it's probably not too safe on dogs. So be careful with your deet, stoners. ![]() |

| DEET is used as a mosquito repellent because it temporarily neutralizes the a mosquito's olfactory glands (their sense of smell) DEET's interaction with the olfactory system on other insects/animals is very different depending on the animal in question. It's possible that coating something with DEET could reduce the chance of a dog smelling it, but who knows. It is also possible that distracting smells could be used. For example, hide the weed inside a package of hot dogs. I would like some input on how effective this would be. The problem is that the dog would alert on the package, which could result in an officer tearing it apart completely just in case. Or it could have the effect of the canine operator just thinking the dog is alerting on the meat smell. Any smell which actually repels the dog will cause much unwanted attention.
