Ok, there's been this really weird thing going on and I'm really suspicious now... Several months ago, my brother got pulled over and hit with possession and paraphernalia charges. He had to go to court, had a fine, and he is currently on probation. Now I am hearing things from several of my friends and people I don't know that he's worked something out with the cops and he's helping them bust dealers to get his case expunged from his record. I'm REALLY confused because my brother or my family haven't mentioned a thing about this, and considering I live in the same HOUSE as him, my first thought was "how could this be true, going on right under my nose?" Plus, my Dad went with him to the court and I could have sworn that his case was going to get expunged regardless if he's well behaved on probation. I have also heard that cops work out deals with kids to let them off so that if they're buying weed, they themselves won't get in trouble for buying, possessing, or smoking it just as long as they lead them to the sources. Is this accurate? I know there are some cops on the message board, so I'm really interested in learning more about this... I mean it makes sense, yet I have to say its a little hypocritical. However, despite all the things in my head telling me that it is just a rumor, there have been some pretty damn convincing things that have lead me to believe he is... Here is the list of things making me suspicious: -Several friends of mine coming up to me, his sister, asking/telling me he's a snitch. -One of my friends said his dealer hooked him up and he seemed really nervous during the exchange, had a shady person in his car with him, and after it was done a white undercover cop car was looming around. -I'm good friends with a dealer, and he knows someone who lives about 2 hours away (in the same state, though) who mentioned my brother's FULL NAME as a person on the "snitch list"... I mean, my brother isn't generally a well-liked person around the area, but his name popping up in an area 2 HOURS AWAY from us? WEIRD! -JUST AT THIS VERY MOMENT (No kidding) my brother came into my room... and we had some small talk (he asked me about work, blah blah blah) and he happened to freaking mention specifics about someone who recently got busted in our area... When I asked him how he knew about it, he said "Uh, I found out from his best friend". -Apparently our area is "hot" (as in, a lot of people have been getting busted and not many people are in the game as there used to be). He knows about this "rumor", and has denied it to people but he isn't exactly the most truthful person. Plus, he's over 18 so something like this can be kept confidential between him and the cops... I dunno, anyone have any advice/insights for me?

I'd say it's just a rumor and your brother, though it seems he's not well liked, isn't snitching on people to get a paraphenalia/possession charge expunged. Usually it's not a priority for small time misdemeanor busts to get "flipped" and take down random, small time dealers. Sure someone with more knowledge could expand on tha legalities behind this, but I'd rest assured that he's no snitch

I don't think he would be truthful with me because he, himself is still trying to get bud from people and he has very little connects left as it is. He has been asking me where to find stuff and no one will help him out because they already THINK he's a snitch... if he truthfully admitted to me that he was, and he knows that I would warn my friends about him or to be careful, he potentially would be risking all and any chance of getting bud. That's just the way he is- he thinks only for himself sometimes.

why would he be trying to find weed on his own if, first and most importantly -- he was working with the cops, and second, if he were on probation and had just gotten arrested for possession? it doesn't add up in my head, unless your brother just has poor life-skills ![]()

Well I'm no expert but in hometown if Baltimore that's a tactic a lot of cops use, we call them 'leashes'. They go out and do what they do and keep cops informed on particulars of any dealers of interest. However a lot of people who do this usually are crack heads and heroin addicts and cops usually just pay them enough to get dope from their targets. In your brother's case it would be very strange for him to leave a house and then have a cop patrol around it. Cops don't want to hit a house until they have good intel and a nice mix of both money and drugs, aka striking when the iron's hot. I'd def. sitdown and make your brother aware that people think he's a snitch, it's not worth it to lay in bed with cops. They're job is to follow law and keep drugs off the street and should someone decide to 'act' on floating information you're brother could realistically get killed or maimed. Cops have to play by the rules, people don't

From what I understand about cops hiring snitches, the end goal is to find a large scale distributer or grower to bust. This as a much larger impact than busting some 18 yr old kid who sells to his friends, or some random person who uses. They convince people to participate by offering a deal. The deal would only make sense to me when it outweighs the desire NOT to snitch. To me that means people using highly addictive substances who feel they can't live without them are prospects because they normally have multiple arrest records, and won't be able to pass the UIs during probation. Dealers are also prospects because their sentences will be quite large if no compromise is made. Large distributors would also be prospects because they will be facing huge jail time, and should be able to lead the cops/DEA to the grow operation they purchase from. As I'm not in law enforcement I can't say for sure who their targets are, but I imagine these are the major ones. I put that out there because the idea of a pot smoker who got a fine and probation for a possession and paraphernalia charge, seems an unlikely person to assume the snitch role. What deal was he given that was so great he was willing to be a snitch? What reason would he have for being willing to make such a deal? If it's true, then your brother is either one of the most selfish people walking the Earth (sorry), or there's a piece of this we're not aware of.

| If you're a snitch and want to stay healthy and intact, you don't tell anyone about it. You're only safety is in anonymity and doubt. Once you admit that you're a snitch, you might as well put a gun to your head.

Maybe he is a snitch. Would you love him less because he is one? Maybe he saw an opportunity to get out of trouble. Is he doing anything illegal or immoral? Who am I to judge him?
