He most likely acted like a "dick" because you attempted to assert a non-existant 'right.' Read some case law on where the fourth amendment has been upheld to apply before you assume that the police have to jump through flaming hoops just to question and temporarily detain you (and then confiscate the illegal substance you had in plain view).

I don't know why it's so hard for some people to understand: Be respectful towards the police, and don't act like a know-it-all, and your experience with them will (usually) go exponentially better.
