How many FEDERAL arrests are made for possessing a weed pipe in an airport? I'd venture to say the number is EXTREMELY low, if it happens at all. A pipe simply isn't a major priority most places, and there's no reason to believe it would ever be prosecuted federally for any reason. The only federal convictions I'm aware of regarding pipes and whatnot were commerical operations selling such items. I've yet to see a federal prosecution for personal possession of a pipe in an AP. If you have info that suggests otherwise, please share it.

Perhaps you misunderstood my point.
As many of us know, when someone is detained or arrested, the officer/s (we're talking 'local' here) will run a background check. Depending on the circumstances surrounding the detainment along with the specifics of the 'findings', if the officer/s feel it's warranted they will have no compunction using what they have to rock that person's world.
That could certainly include threats of federal persecution.
Of course some people might be savvy enough to realize a likely bluff when they see it but the vast majority are likely scared shitless enough that they may cave over something they don't have to...

Ok maybe this will help settle some dispute on the subject....I was actually pulled aside for an acrylic piece at the BWI airport a few months back going to visit my friend in NC. It had no metal and I had thrown out the bowl because it was trashy, and this was just purchased and never used. They searched my bag after X-raying it (guess the shape was questionable) and they pulled me aside into one of those rooms and proceeded to bring me to a room where two cops were to interrogate me. They asked me again and again what it was and my desired use for it, and I continually said it was a water pipe and it was meant for tobacco use (I actually had some in a container from a hookah shop). They persisted on for about 20 minutes trying to get me to admit that it was meant for marijuana, but I held my ground. About 20 minutes before my flight was about to leave I politely said to them "I have nothing further to say on the matter I have sufficiently explained why I have this and I am in my complete legal right to own and bring this water pipe on board, if you feel otherwise then you are more than welcome to detain me and we will bring this to court with my lawyer." Well that took their spirits away and they told me I was clear to go and even gave me directions to where my flight was.

Thanks for the anecdotal evidence Chronik Glad to hear you were OK

However, when you are dealing with heightened airline security and paradoxically legal items such as waterpipe/bongs, I would travel on the side of wary. I'd hate to see anyone get busted, harassed, miss a flight or receive legal threats for something as petty as a clean bong at an airport. It may be very unlikely that you would be federally prosecuted for such a crime, but why take a risk? Why be made an example of?

I would only ever suggest mailing it to an appropriate address at your destination.....

I mean my disclaimer would be I may of been an exception rather than a rule, but glass items are definitely going to be seized, no way around that. I do consider myself somewhat fortunate, but I want you all to know that the lawyer part was not a bluff, if they had detained me I did actually have a law entity who would have come and represented me. Never bluff with legal issues especially if you are young, cops are people too and can tell BS. In one of the most relevant economics courses I took in college they had a games strategy that had 4 distinct characteristics to combat tit-for-tat games. They were
1) Dont be too clever
2) Be able to reciprocate cooperation and defection
3) Don't be envious
4) Don't be first to defect

Many a pot smoker would benefit from learning these and applying them to real life

I say buy some tobacco or herbal bud, and store it with the water pipe. That way it is more apparant that you where going to use it for tobacco or herbal bud.

In general, try to steer clear of herbal buds, some of them look similar enough to marijuana to cause way more issues than they're worth.

It's like carrying a bag of flour around with you, "No officer, it's flour!" You're still going to end up waiting an hour and a half for them to do 10 tests to make sure...

Except in a lot of places you can get charged for just having an imitation controlled substance, like a ziploc bag full of flour, or salt for instance.

after reading the responses the answer is personal choice.

But, beware that interstate makes it federal (if they choose) and though it may be a misdemeanor... it would be a pain even if delayed...while the cops interrogate etc.

SO ya feel lucky ? well...do ya? have at it then. I think this thread did a great job in representing both sides thus far. I'v chosen not to carry while flying.

Also remember that if you hold a medical card...the feds are looking to make a case at times and the issue is currently at the supreme circus of the us. Personally I'm looking to avoid any situation that may cause a problem for the medical mj program.
