I think it depends on the airports to be honest. December 2006 I took a trip from SFO to Amsterdam, then to Egypt (stopover). On the way back, I brought 15 hookah's of various sizes. They checked my bags in Cairo Airport but they checked everyone's almost, granted they're a lot more lenient there then here. Anyway we then flew through amsterdam back to san francisco and in SFO they checked the bags because I had 21 packs of hookah tobacco and they wanted to make sure I wasn't taking it to sell w/o paying tax on it, even though that was my plan. Anyway there wasn't much problem. Oh, and 1 of the 15 hookah's broke, one of the nicer ones too, but 1:14 isn't that bad in my opinion.
This summer I'm going to New York (SFO to Atlanta to Newburgh, NY a small airport) and I'm going to buy a bong in Philadelphia from the Illadelph bong shop. I'm planning on shipping it back because that way if anything happens, I'll get the insurance from USPS and they'll give me the money back in which I'll just get my friend to buy the same one w/the money. Anyway, would you guys advise that I DON'T use it before sending it via USPS? or do you think it'll matter? I was honestly hoping to use it there with my friend, but I could always just use someone else's bong there.

If it were me I wouldn't use it though I think the chances of there being a problem unlikely unless you don't pack and seal the box yourself of course
Thing is, if you use it and then plan on shipping UPS with insurance then you'll have to supply your name, address etc so if, for whatever reason, it was discovered and they wanted to mess with you they easily could.
If you were to ship it w/o insurance/contact info and it was discovered then the worst case would be that it was confiscated and you'd never receive it (nor a knock on the door).

Again, the likelihood of your having a problem is quite small. Still, as I said, if it were me I would not use it, I would pack it really well (myself) and ship it UPS with or without insurance depending on my astrological reading that particular day...

After rereading previous posts, I'm not sure why I didn't mention this...

I have packed pipes in checked luggage before. Never bongs... but multiple glass and metal pipes. One of the bags was searched had a glass pipe in it (I believe...), nothing was said to me.

This was in 2004, from OKC to CMH.

Default sorry it took so long, but....

I have been to busy enjoying my new bong in the comforts of my own home.

Its nice.

I went through the security check in San Diego and nothing was said to me.

I guess it just depends on who is running the machine when you go through.

I put this in my carry on luggage with bubble wrap and put some clothes on top of it.

thanks for all the feedback!
