| Can we all agree then that: marijuana use != impaired ? I think some of the confusion is that I'm not saying its ok to drive impaired... I'm just saying that any amount of marijuana use for any person doesn't immediately mean "impairment". Quote:

"Common sense" doesn't mean fact... it means the general (or common) belief. If you go back far enough in history, you will find that "common sense" says that if someone is acting odd, they are most likely a witch. Another example is that "common sense" would tell you that inhaling large amounts of liquids would cause a person to drown or die (or just be downright unhealthy)... however factually this isn't true. There are indeed breathable liquids that defy "common sense". Last edited by shibshib : 06-15-2008 at 11:57 PM. | ||

| I don't feel like arguing it. I know I am right. Driving under the influence of marijuana isn't responsible, not as a driver and not as an advocate for legalization. The tolerance factor is negligible, I am talking about the principal of being a safe marijuana user, and that means no driving after consumption, much like alcohol or any other inebriating substance. |

| I can imagine driving on a sativa high, but not at all on a indica stone.

| The effects of cannabis are clearly and indisputably different from those of caffiene by any user of both substances. The high which one experiences from cannabis (or other substances) is an inebriating high/stone. Alcohol fits into this category. Sativa and indica are both inebriating but in different ways. Any time your judgement or reaction time is affected you are inebriated. Medical use is perhaps the only exception to this rule. I am a cautious sober driver, but under the influence of ANY inebriants makes me automatically call a cab or walk. There are enough borderline retards on the road right now. It would be a disaster if there were all high! And despite your medical condition, the vast majority of people who use cannabis do become inebriated. Impaired driving is dangerous from numerous viewpoints and studies consistently show this. In fact, if a person is "impaired," then by definition they perform worse than unimpaired. Perhaps you can drive after smoking, but I don't think this would be a good thing to promote, and it would hold back the legalization cause. Most users don't fit your profile, and that causes lives to become endangered. |

| Its a matter of degrees, people. I could stop off after work and drink two beers over the course of an hour or so, drive home, and be both safe and legal. If I stop at the bar after work, and decide to stay til it closes, pounding down Jagermeister shots as fast as the bartender can pour them, driving would be a stupid thing to do, as I'd be extremely drunk. On that same line of thinking, I don't think twice about hitting my one-hitter a few times during the course of a roadtrip. I don't believe it makes me a worse driver, and I don't believe I'm a danger to myself or anyone else. Then again, if I did a couple bongloads of White Widow covered in kief....chances are, I would have no busioness getting behind the whell of a car. Impairment, whether from alcohol or cannabis, comes in degrees. Just like a beer or two is consiodered to be a safe amount to drink before driving, I see nothing wrong with smoking a small amount. However, getting annihelated off of either substance means you'd be foolish to drive. Theres a world of difference between 1 beer and 8, just like theres a world of difference between a couple hits and trying to smoke yourself comotose. Like I said, its a matter of degrees. You can't logically make the argument that "driving impaired is driving impaired, and its wrong" without defining both impairment, and the amounts of what substances were consumed.

| I definitely agree with Troublemaker. For the vast majority of smokers, a few hits are not enough to become "impaired". I don't do it often, but I'm not afraid to be a little buzzed and be behind the wheel. It simply does not affect my driving in any negative way, and to an extent may help my focus. There comes a point where one can be too stoned to drive, but up to that point, it really just isn't a problem. I can recall once driving home after just buying some goods, and passing a small, very skinny joint between myself the friend I had with me. It turns out that the herb was more potent than I expected, and I felt like I was a little too high to be driving. It wouldn't happen again, but even still, I obeyed all the laws perfectly, driving just as well as I would have sober. |
