Marijuana should be legalized because it is as safe if not more safe then most drugs on the market

in today's world. For example each year, more than 400,000 Americans are killed by cigarette

smoking, "finds no credible reports of deaths induced by marijuana. The US Drug Abuse Warning

Network (DAWN) records instances of drug mentions in medical examiners' reports, and though

marijuana is mentioned, it is usually in combination with alcohol or other drugs. Marijuana alone has

not been shown to cause an overdose death." States the Drug Abuse Warning Network (DAWN).

According to Dictionary.com a drug is a "chemical substances prepared and sold as pharmaceutical

items, either by prescription or over the counter." Therefore marijuana is not even a drug rather it

is a plant, one it witch if you happen to burn it has some effects.


Legalizing marijuana would greatly decrease the burden of America's prison system on tax payers. A

1999 study showed that 60,000 individuals were behind bars for marijuana use. This cost taxpayers

$1.2 billion, according to rawstory.com, also these numbers don't include the individuals who had

there probation or parole revoked for marijuana use. In total, in prosecuting and policing individuals

with regards to marijuana, between $7 billion and $10 billion was spent — and that's just last year.

As I see it marijuana should be completely legal it would lower taxes, or put more money in places

needed, not in drug prosecutions, it's not even a drug according to most definitions. Marijuana is

much safer than smoking and other legal drugs.

While you brought up some of the stuff that needs to get out, and your hearts definitely in the right place, I think you should do a little bit more work on this. It definitely needs some editing- for example, look at the bit from DAWN again, and at the sentences surrounding it. Notice any awkwardness.

Secondly, I would drop the portion about marijuana not being a drug, because it is and your health teacher will mention it. I find it odd you arrive at this conclusion, since the definition you chose to use was the fourth listed on Dictionary.com, and marijuana meets the requirements of the second and third definition, and if you believe evidence, then it also meets the first. According to mainstream, legal, and medical definitions, yes, marijuana is a drug (further tip- if you absolutely must use online dictionaries for a formal assignment, then I recommend you use Meriam Webster's. Since they also have print additions, they are seen as a bit more legitimate sources).

And, since it is for a health class instead of a legal class, it might be prudent to instead focus on the arguments from the perspective of medical marijuana... that way, it would be a bit more relevant for your class. Why would your health teacher want to read something about recreational marijuana use? Medical marijuana is a bit more of a hot issue too- people can conceivably make a moral claim on keeping marijuana away because it can hurt you in intangible ways. But what if we have evidence that it's actually beneficial?

Finally, isn't it a bit... short? It can't be over a page long... maybe the assignment is only for a page, I don't know. When I was your age, though, my teachers would have crucified me if I turned in a paper under two pages double spaced. There's plenty of info to flesh out the paper if you need it, especially if you take the mmj route. Good luck dude.

Ahh... Just a suggestion, run it through Microsoft Word or a spell checker or something before you hand it in.

The only mistake I noticed reading through once was at the bottom of the first paragraph, change "witch" to "which"...I guess that wouldn't show up on a spell check, but if there's that mistake there may be others.In my opinion, it's always better to hand in flawless work, it disproves the "marijuana users are stoooopid" stereotype most health teachers have in their minds....(At least the health teachers at my school ...Fuck you, Ms. O.)



EDIT: Everything ITG said is pretty much sound advice, too.. I'm 17, and the same thing he's talking about applies to my school, as well.
