| This was response to Mr. James Capra who wrote a column saying how legalization or decriminalization would be worse. He also works for the Dallas sector of the DEA. NORML.ORG US TX: OPED: Legalizing Pot in No Way Makes Us Safer Dear Mr. Capra, I do not understand why individuals such as yourself and others in the DEA continue to fight against Marijuana. I'm one who believes in the legalization of drugs but I only truly care about Marijuana being legalized. I don't understand why the government continues to fund you guys, because you all are failing miserably. You are kidding yourself if you believe you can reduce the supply and demand for drugs. Your tactics are backfiring, the DEA's tactics and enforcement of drug laws only makes the drug lords and cartels richer. You are driving up the price with these tactics, in the three decades that the DEA has been around you all have accomplished nothing except for making the United States the top country for illegal drug use. The market is too strong, structured and sophisticated to be stopped. There's too much money to be made. Every time you all make an arrest on a drug dealer there is another person to take their place. Now to the main point. What makes you think you have the right to tell people they cannot use marijuana if they choose to? Marijuana is virtually harmless and is much safer than alcohol and tobacco. You think it's disturbing that people argue that consenting adults should be allowed to consume marijuana because you think it's harmful but yet you don't find the consumption of alcohol and tobacco to be disturbing yet they kill 150-200,000 more people per year? That is hypocritical but typical of the DEA. You better face the facts James that you all cannot beat drugs, you cannot beat Marijuana, you cannot keep a person from consuming a substance. The DEA and the government does nothing except lie to the American public about skewed stats saying that drug use and demand is decreasing which is laughable. I know it's only your job but don't you realize that the agency you work for is doing nothing but wasting resources, taxpayers money and you're just making drug lords richer? Oh and the only reason as many people are in treatment for marijuana as they are is because they probably plea bargained down and agreed to go to treatment rather than go to jail or be on probation.

| If I were Mr. Capra, I'd reply: The DEA didn't and doesn't make the drug laws. Those laws were put in place by your representatives. We are a law enforcement agency, nothing more. We enforce that laws that the legislature has put on the books. You are directing your ire and your questions to the wrong people. If you don't like the current laws, petition your representatives to change them.
