| How many people even know why we call it marijuana in the first place? Do you know where that term came from? Look it up. If people stopped calling it marijuana and called it cannabis instead, in my opinion, that would go a long way towards gaining acceptance of it as both alternative medicine and a recreational drug. The term marijuana can be compared to the terms applied to alcohol during alcohol prohibition. Hooch, moonshine, booze... whatever it was called, they all sound bad to me. Call it what it is, cannabis. Try to avoid referring to it as a brand of cigarette smoked by illegal farm workers from Mexico, because that is not all that cannabis is. Not anymore. |

| Do YOU even know why we call it that? There are only rumors of it's origin, no one is even certain. All we know is it's spanish for Mary and Jane, the rest is only speculation. So if you heard that illegal farm workers from Mexico is where the name came from, well it's only a tale. Some people think it was meant to refer to as Poncho Villa's whore, where if a female smoked it, you would become as loose as Mary Jane. It's ALLLL tales and speculationBesides, if most people don't even know the meaning of the word(as you say yourself), then what difference would it make changing it? In otherwords, how would more people gain acceptance of "cannabis" if they didn't even know what "marijuana" or more specifically "marihuana" meant anyways? ![]() Everything has nicknames, even legal drugs.

| There was a tobacco cigarette brand called Mary Jane in the early 1900's. If people realized the true reason why the USA's first Drug Czar chose to call it marijuana, it would go a long way towards educating our country on how stupid the law was in the first place. The more that people refuse to call it marijuana, the more the ignorant will look into the history of the law, and the more that they will change their mind. Mary Jane was the girl on the cigarettes a lot of Mexicans smoked at the time and cannabis was made illegal for the sole purpose of incarcerating the non-white people in this country. | Etymology From Mexican Spanish marihuana < mariguan. First attested from 1894 of uncertain origin. Alteration by influence of the proper name Maria Juana (“‘Mary Jane’”) is believed to be folk etymology. marijuana - Wiktionary |

Marijuana is and has been the colloquial name for cannabis-as-a-drug for a very long time and that is unlikely to change. Once people realized that cannabis is another name for marijuana, they would look at it just as they look at marijuana today.

You simply telling me this is the origin isn't proving anything. As I said, there are many stories to the origin, and yours is just another. But I'll wait to see if you can come up with any evidence ![]() | |

| I've got an idea. Why don't you call it what you want, and I'll call it what I want. I choose to call it Marijuana, because I choose to call it marijuana. You can choose to call yours whatever you want. I also choose to call my asshole steve, care to comment on that too? |
