There's an organization in Denver that appears to have the most effective approach to convincing people that marijuana should be legalized. The organization is called SAFER (Safer Alternative For Enjoyable Recreation) and their position is simple:

This kind of single-point approach has been highly effective. Although small and poorly funded, SAFER got an issue onto the ballot that passed and legalized possession of up to an ounce in Denver. Since the Denver police kept busting people under the state possession law, SAFER got another issue on the ballot and got it passed, reducing marijuana possession to the lowest priority for Denver police. They got a state-wide issue on the ballot to legalize possession for the State of Colorado. It failed, but did pretty well. They plan to try again.

SAFER is eager to help groups in other parts of the country get started using the same approach, so if you're interested in devoting a lot of time to being an activist, this should be something for you to look into.

I know how you feel, but there are other people that do still care.

The Barney Frank/Ron Paul proposed legalization bill got a lot more positive press than I expected it to get. There are people who care, though they're only a tiny fraction of those who should care.

What's hard for me to understand is people refusing to act in their own self-interest. Not having to worry about getting busted would certainly improve my quality of life. Being able to buy legal weed for a fraction of the price of black market weed would certainly improve the quality of my balance sheet.

Giving up on people who care, or those that should care, is just like giving up yourself.
We can't win this alone, we need more people on our side.
Many are standing on the fence, waiting to be drawn one way or another. Let's have them on our side.
Even those that are on the other side can see the light, they convert, they realize the err of MJ prohibition...

Safer is a great organization, I've heard a lot about them from members here. From what I understand, it's totally unique, in that it's all about marijuana being 'safer'. Thanks for the reminder on these guys Buzzby.

I've actually been seriously contemplating contacting and organizing the first SSDP chapter here in Alaska at the university I attend. I know we can easily get enough members, and the support would be astounding. I just want to make sure I can balance a commitment to SSDP, a part-time job, and manage full-time school. This could finally be the year I am capable, and secure, as a student and adult to take on a duty like this. I'm still not sure though, I'm hardly the best student, so I really need to put my education first and keep my focus.

Sounds like a great group I am going to do some homework and make a donation if able too.
Once I am back to work of course, and yes it would have to be anonymous.

At Hempfest SAFER had a booth. They really are a great organization. The people at the booth I talked to were so informative and kind. You could tell they were genuinely enthusiastic about their message. I was lucky enough to win a free t-shirt, which I absolutely love. It's awesome:

I'm a huge supporter of Safer(hence the Sig pic ). They really are effective at getting the message across in a way that most people can understand. I made a small donation to them ($25) in the past, and I am hoping to triple that in a couple of weeks and donate $75.. maybe even $100 if I can. Every little bit helps for sure.

On the subject of SAFER, how do you folks feel about the Cindy McCain: Drug Dealer - DrugDealerCindy.com?

It seems a bit...aggressive to me. The airport thing seemed a bit radical to me too. I'm beginning to think they are the PITA of the MJ cause. They certainly are gaining attention for the movement.

There's a thread on another, unrelated forum I visit started because of this website. The community consists of average Joes. Primarily right wingers and to one degree or another. There was a surpising amount of support for legalization in general. Even those who didn't outright support it, generally said they didn't oppose or didn't care/hadn't thought much about it.

I really want to get into that thread and start preaching our message (via links to NORMLs info, scientific research and such rather than opinion and debate.) It's going to be a time consuming project though. These folks are generally hard core debaters and having been around for years, certain of my personal 'fans' of mine and the general troll population there will give me a run for my money.
