| I'm compiling a list of reasons people have said on why they feel MJ should remain illegal. I've come up with a bunch, but if you have any to add please do so. Basically what I hope to do with these excuses (and any other reasons people have heard) is to compile a "How to win a decriminalization debate" guide. I'm hoping to find as many reasons as possible on why people think MJ should be illegal, and attempt to combat those reasons by finding previous research done (including medical research, scientific surveys / polls, etc.). Note: I don't personally agree with most of these reasons... I'm just compiling a list of what people have said - It's addicting - It's hurting / killing our kids - There are health issues (lung cancer, heart problems,... add any if you know of others) - Crime / violence - Causes paranoia / anxiety - If legalized, many more people will begin using - It is a gate-way drug - It is not an FDA approved drug - Higher potency now compared to years ago - Lowers one's ability to set long and short term goals - If legalized, there would be more drugged drivers I also plan to add a section on why MJ SHOULD be legal. Some of these reasons I've found so far are (feel free to add to this list too): - Many medical uses (only know of a few uses, so please help me with this one) - The younger generations are beginning to mistrust the government / police - Gangs and cartels are the only ones benefiting from MJ being illegal (others too?) - Getting arrested for possession in some states can have major consequences, even if the individual is not incarcerated - Hemp has many applications (paper, rope,... please help me on this one too!) - Added: Frees up law enforcement to focus on more dangerous drugs and criminals - Added: The revenue from taxed sales of MJ would be in the billions, not counting the other uses hemp has - Added: The amount of money saved through not arresting people would also be in the billions of dollars Once I finish, I plan on posting the "report" on the forums so you all can use the compiled info to help others understand why MJ should be decriminalized and hopefully they will in-turn support the HR-5843 bill. EDIT: If you have any RELIABLE sources to back up any additions you have to my list so far (or if you know of some RELIABLE sources with good info), please state them in your post. Thanks!! Jew PLEASE READ!!!! Please don't comment on the list I've made so far (ex. "OMG that is such BS that people think MJ is addicting!" or "I think it should be legal...". Many of us here will likely disagree with a lot of the things people have said against MJ... no need to rant about it. Thanks) Last edited by Jewbutca : 08-21-2008 at 01:10 AM. |

| Why should marijuana remain illegal? I dont think it should, the people with a whole lot of money think it should be, ask you're senator and see if you get a answer. |

| Jewbutka, this would be such a useful addition to these boards. I know I could use a well constructed 'script' to use. I'll poke around when I have a chance and list what cons and what research supports those. I've certainly seen enough out there. Here's a very helpful list about medical marijuana research. | ok some more reasons for legalization -If legal it would be taxable and be profitable for the govt. rather than a money pit -people may not want to move on to harder drugs if weed (a nice drug) is legal -less criminals in the jail system -stoners will be more accepted in society (i guess thats a good thing) -less people will smoke tobacco (which is more dangerous) |

| Why should it remain illegal? Because there is no pressing need for it to be legal. Congress will never go out of their way to do something that doesn't -need- to be done. That's not how it works. Never expect a group of people who have and exercise the right to raise their own pay to go out of their way to do good without reward. |
