Ive met far too many pot smokers who will flat out deny any connection to the plant and argue against legalization efforts for personal interests (career, family, friends, politics, law enforcement, etc.)
I do think it's sad the people have to hide somthing harmless that they enjoy. I wish they didn't have to as a number of these people are very successfull in their career and it would help nulify the "lazy stoner" stereo type.

Yeah but who get's more media attention, the drunk who beats his wife and kids, or the drunk who sits at home with a good family life

Who gets more media attention, the jobless stoner plastered in pot clothing, or the doctor who enjoys it behind closed doors.

You're absolutely correct, but as cyrus pointed out - the negative stuff gets more attention, and that is one of the main reasons you guys (mj users) are in this predicament.

Again - you're totally correct. However, perpetuating the "stoner-stereotype" is just not a tactful approach to legalization, no matter which way you look at it.

I agree with you, it's not right. But it's the way things are, and unless you want to contribute to prolonging legalization, you'll bite your tongue - so to speak - for the time being.

You're right, they don't have a logical argument in this regard. But they're still the ones you need to persuade, and a rebellious kid who makes what they perceive to be irrational life choices only serves to reinforce their misguided decisions.

Also you don't have to be a corprate monkey to be succesfull
I'm sorry if I sounded too in your face there, watching fight club while high gets me going. I still stand on the same platform when it comes to pot leaves though, they are who they are, if smoking weed might make people love the leaf, we should let them know. We wouldn't want John Q to wake up in the morning unknowingly adorned in marijuana gear after a smokeout would we?

I don't know about you but the first time I smoked pot I didn't get the irrisistable urge to go out and buy clothing plastered with pot leaves made out of hemp.

I might be alone on this but I tend to remember everything I did when I smoke(unless I pass out) I don't think unknowingly waking up in weed clothes is going to be possable.

Ok, I support chqange in drug policy. I give to at least one legalization/actvist group annually, usually the DPA (Drug Policy alliance). However, I also wear the occasional "weed shirt" in public, and yes, I'll tell anyone who asks that I believe weed should be legalized, and can further expand on the topic by informing them of exactly WHY I think it should be legalized, with intelligent, scientifically sound arguments that can't be easily argued against. I'm also a decet example of a fairly responsible toker these days. I'm married, ahve held down the same job for 5 years, am well respected by my employer and felow coworkers, have no issues making ends meet, am college educated, and consider myself a fairly intelligent person. How is my weed T-shirt going to hurt the legalization effort when I can basically be a poster boy for showing that daily smokers can be every bit the productive citizen as everyone else? How is my telling people weed should be legalized a bad thing, when I can debate the topic both passionatey and intelligently, while being able to rip apart common arguments against legalization? marijuana is part of my life, and one I'll express freely when theres no fear of (legal)repurcussions for doing so. How is my expression of that aspect of my lifestyle a hindrence to the movement? Why shouldn't I express my support for the legalization of a plant thats near to my heart? Weed is something thats played a major role in my life, from meeting my wife at my dealer's house to using it to help me break my self-destructive addiction to alcohol, to being something I look foreward to after a stressful day of work. Its bonded with with friends. All in all, who are you to say I'm hurting the movement because I choose to express a sentiment that is very important to me? I might wear a weed t-shirt and say "yeah, man, it needs to be legalized....." but I'm also combating the stereotypes by being able to take that sentiment, and being able to expand on it on a level many cannot. Who's really hurting the movement? people like me, or people so ashamed of their illegal hobby that they won't support the major legalization efforts out there or argue their ideals when faced with the typical prohibitionist bullshit? I might be wearing a "Legalize Freedom" t-shirt adorned with mj leaves, butI'm also likely doing far more than you to legalize the plant we all know and love

Yeah I second what TM42 just said. I too try to take the role of the responsible pot smoker. I do wear "weed clothing" from time to time. But I try to show a positive side of the hobby by being a good worker held in high regards by co-wokers and my bosses. I am married, have my own home, a decent job, good freinds. I have no criminal record. I'm not ashamed or try to hide the fact that I smoke pot and believe that it should be legal. I am actually very open about it and support legalization efforts when I can.

It's faulty logic to suggest that someone can't pass judgement on something unless they're tried it themselves.

I've never tried marijuana but I've sent a letter to my MP telling him I don't want a 'drug war'. DO THIS. It takes no more than 10 - 15 minutes to write up a quick letter and email it off. Whether or not you do it, I can guarantee you there's some old conservative writing a letter supporting the opposite position.
