| (BuzzNote: This arrived in today's email. I logged on to the PAC website and gave them $100 of my "economic stimulus" money. I was shocked to see how little money [$37,050] has been donated to the NORML PAC since its inception in 2001. If we want to be able to compete with the Big Pharma and Big Booze lobbyists, our lobbyists have to have money to contribute to political campaigns. Please do your part.) Those of us who advocate for legal reform also need to financially support those elected officials who endorse our position on marijuana policy, to make sure they get re-elected and to demonstrate that these positions now enjoy widespread support among the general public. Those members of Congress and state legislatures who carry our message make it possible for us to generate a policy debate that inevitably moves us closer to our political goals. Skin In The Game As you well know, non-profit corporations such as NORML and the NORML Foundation cannot by law provide any support, financial or otherwise, to political candidates or office holders. NORML can lobby for legislative change, and the NORML Foundation can engage in educational and philanthropic work, but neither organization may support or oppose candidates for public office. That's where the NORML PAC, NORML's Political Action Committee comes into play. This is the arm of NORML that permits us to provide political contributions to candidates for public office and elected officials who support NORML-friendly legislation. Under federal and state laws, political actions committees (PACs), such as the NORML PAC, are the only entities permitted to engage in partisan political matters. In the perfect world, candidates would not need to raise money to run for office, and those of us who advocate for legislative reforms would not need to help candidates who are supportive of our positions raise money. But we live in the real word, and recognize that our ability to help cannabis law reform-friendly candidates raise the necessary money to successfully run for office, or for reelection, is terribly important. For many of these office holders, our willingness to contribute PAC money to their campaigns is a sign of how serious we are about the policy changes we seek. NORML PAC History Since its inception in 2001, the NORML PAC has raised and distributed a total of $37,050 to 33 different NORML-friendly state and federal legislators, and candidates for office. This is a good start, but we can and must do more. To view a listing of NORML PAC recipients, click here. Until responsible marijuana smokers become more active in the political process, we cannot expect our elected officials to think of us as an important political force. We must continue to identify those members of Congress, and their counterparts at the state legislature level, who are supportive of our positions and we must register our appreciation for their support by making PAC contributions in this election year. Donating To The NORML PAC Please make a generous contribution today to the 'NORML PAC' to help us financially support NORML-friendly candidates for office. Visit NORML PAC and make your online contribution today in the amount of $5000, $1,000, $500, $100, or whatever you can afford. Otherwise, please call the national office toll free @ 1-888-67-NORML with your credit card, and we'll take your NORML PAC contribution over the phone. Of course, you can always mail a check or money order as well.* Please act today and thank you in advance for supporting NORML-friendly political candidates and office holders. Regards, Allen F. St. Pierre, Executive Director Member, Board of Directors NORML / NORML Foundation *Two Birds…One Stone Only current members of NORML can actually donate to the organization's PAC, therefore if your membership has elapsed or you're not currently a member, the first $25 of your donation will be deducted from your NORML PAC donation.
