S. 3260: Financial Services and General Government Appropriations Act, 2009

Quote:

Section 821 -
Prohibits the use of funds contained in this Act to enact or carry out any law, rule, or regulation to legalize or otherwise reduce penalties associated with the possession, use, or distribution of any schedule I substance under the Controlled Substances Act or any tetrahydrocannabinols (THC) derivative.
Provides that the Legalization of Marijuana for Medical Treatment Initiative of 1998, also known as Initiative 59, approved by the electors of the District on November 3, 1998, shall not take effect.
i might be reading it wrong
but it seems to me that this bill is stopping the chance of decriminalization/ legalization

I think that act only applies to the fiscal budget for 2009, but I could be wrong.

And as f*cked up as our country is, I don't think we should be focusing on decriminalization in 2009 anyway...

I think we should keep at it. Sure the economy is looking bad. Sure we are paying for all the bailouts. Sure we make sacrifices in order to pay rent. As well as non violent marijuana users behind bars that lost everything.

It might be alarmist to start hiding under the furniture, but creeps like Rahm(ulan) Emmanuel will no doubt be behind a lot of anti-Cannabis crap legislation in the near future.
I actually feel that the worst is yet to come.

^^I tend to agree.

I think there will be a crackdown on MJ use under this new admin.

Bhikku-
I think that we should legalize MJ and hemp because we have so many other problems to deal with.

Though I feel that there are far to many people who stand to loose a large share of their market with the legalization of MJ for that to happen any time soon...

I don't think Obama is an idiot. He will not do anything too radical.

He'll face a huge backlash if he breaks too many promises.

He won't be "actively" breaking promises - I think he simply won't change anything regarding MJ and MJ legislation, medical or otherwise.

Sure, he said he wouldn't appropriate federal funds / manpower towards prosecuting individual patients. He didn't say much on the CA dispensary raids apart from the fact that he would "stop" them, giving no details: this simply allowed him to sound pro-MMJ without any basis. He could very well carry through 8 years of presidency and never touch on the subject, claiming he was too busy with other things in his defense (which might be true, however ordering the DEA to stop raiding CA dispensaries would take all but 30 minutes of his time). Whether that order would have to be officially appropriated or not, if he wanted to do it, quickly, he could.

We aren't going to see much change in this administration.

A Presidential directive could de-fund all raids on medical marijuana dispensaries. They can't raid unless someone is going to pay for it.

ah the government. I am under 18, and dont have extensive knowledge, but i dont see what the downside of legalization/decriminalization would be. I hope Obama does something about it, but the majority of people who are uneducated about marijuana makes me think it wont happen anytime soon.
