There is an idea I have been contemplating for a few months now, and since I haven't heard anybody express a similar idea, I figure I should share it with you all and see what you think.

What if you got a bunch of pot smokers to go to the courthouse or some other significant place in their town or city, and all light up some bud right there. It would be very difficult and very costly to arrest everybody present, depending on how many people were there, and would no doubt make news and bring light to the legalization movement.

This protest idea will most likely stay in the realm of fantasy due to lack of people willing to risk arrest, coordinating many people in secret etc., but just think of how awesome that would be. I picture this scene almost every time I get stoned...

K,meatball-ya don't have to kill everyone's dreams with visions of broken noses. I'm in on the idea. I think every stoner has had that thought at least once. I guess we imagine it going down like "skip-day" in high school,there were so many of us NOT there that they couldn't get EVERYONE in trouble. Regardless,keep dreamin-i will,and ya never know,it may come true.

We did this in San Francisco several times in the 80's. About 1500 to 2000 people would show up. There would be a few arrests. The key to going home rather then going into a jail cell was to leave in a large group. The cops were picking on people who left alone, not groups of 10 or more.

And what good would this do besides showing the non-smokers that we are only a bunch of criminals who don't obey the law?

Showing up and protesting is one thing, but gathering in public or government locations just to smoke up to try to prove a point doesn't sound like it would persuade anyone to listen to you.
A much more responsible route is needed if we want our voice heard on the issue

I don't know, would it really be that irresponsible? Would the average non smoker just see a bunch of people standing around peacefully smoking and just chilling and look at them as a bunch of criminals? They might be surprised as to how non threatening the whole situation would be. At least that is how I picture it. Apparently it has been done before according to some of the other posters (San Francisco, Toronto), so maybe it isn't such a bad idea. Btw what responsible route do you suggest? Nothing else has seemed to work at changing peoples minds, its pretty frustrating...

Dissent is only as effective as the grace of your protest.

Something like this would do more harm than good towards legalizing marijuana.


Want to make a poignant statement and protest marijuana laws?

Make a sign that says "I am not a criminal. Stop Marijuana Prohibition" and wear a brown paper bag over your head with plain and simple clothing. Stand in a public, silent, stoic and still. Wear some fake handcuffs if you want.

Have a stand next to you with pamphlets of information and well known influential and inspiring marijuana users (such as Carl Sagan or Barack Obama ), and include some organizations people might be interested in (MPP, NORML, SAFER, etc.).

That is an image to stick in their heads. It's a form of civil disobedience that is a lot more personal and likely more effective. Changing minds (or should I say, brainwashing? ) is how the War on Drugs is fought, it's also how we will put it to an end, if we are up to it, that is....

Um...this happens every May in Toronto. It's called the Global Marijuana March and several other cities participate. Maybe it's different elsewhere and I just never realized, but in Toronto everyone gathers in front of the government buildings and lights up. I guess some do it for protest and others for fun, but the cops there are always cool about it. As long as you're not causing trouble they'll leave you alone.
