Default According to NORML, well under .0001%....

Are involved in making change happen. From an e-mail from NORML:
Quote:
Well under .0001% of all cannabis consumers are involved in their own liberation, not because they can’t find a marijuana policy group like NORML/MPP/DPA, etc...(these days that takes less then 10 seconds on a computer) to support, it is because, according to almost 40 years of NORML’s focus group data, they are too paranoid and scared to stand up in public and advocate for reform because of fear of law enforcement harrassment, loss of employment, loss of custodial rights, loss of student loans, fear of IRS audits, fear of civil forfeiture, etc...
In its years of existence, NORML has only 14,000 dues paying members! It's not against the law to support any of these organizations and a database of member names isn't evidence of guilt. Let's see if we can encourage people to stand with us and change those numbers! Congress will continue to vote against us if we are not heard.

Thats pretty bad if you have to hide your marijuana smoking for your S/O.

My girlfriend doesn't smoke and I smoke around her all the time. She doesn't like how much I smoke, but she doesn't ever tell me to quit or anything. She's known since the first day of our relationship (when it actually became serious) that I was a toker for life.

On the same note, I know some people are just stupid about it so I guess some people just won't ever understand.

Every little bit counts. I've also started donating to NORML and MPP.

Even without money I wonder if an online petition would have any influence or make a difference? My wife and some other friends who don't smoke support an end to marijuana prohibition.

I guess I'm one of the lucky ones who is married to a non-smoking spouse who doesn't interfere. My parents and her parents know as well. Then again I am a responsible adult, not a minor living underneath someone else's roof.

These organization have programs through which you can set up a regular monthly donation that will be taken from your credit card. A $120 donation all at once seems like a bit of money. $120 as twelve $10 monthly donations is pretty painless. I'm doing this both with NORML and MPP.

National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws (NORML)

Marijuana Policy Project (MPP)

Drug Policy Alliance (DPA)

Does dues-paying members mean anyone who has donated, or is it something different? I, like Buzzby, donate $10 a month to NORML. Am I included in that number?

If I AM, then that's just absolutely atrocious. A few days ago I got their end of a year letter about what's been done, what they hope to do, so on and so forth, and letting me know what cool stuff I could get if I donate $x (incidentally, isn't the point of giving them money so they can spend it on getting stuff done, not sending me stuff?). In one part, NORML on the Net, they talk about things online, and they said:

"This past year also saw a rapid rise in the popularity of NORML on social networking websites such as Facebook (where NORML's cause groups boasts 470,000 supporters), MySpace (where NORML has 57,000 friends)"

Now, I assume there is probably some overlap there, and I know it also doesn't cover everyone. I sort of use facebook, not very often, and even though I'm a donor, I'm not a member of any NORML Facebook group. Maybe that's a good thing though, since it seems even the vast majority of those people, who have already publicly linked their names to supporting NORML, aren't donating any money to the cause. Maybe they're writing letters to their respective politicians, but I don't know man... I'm willing to bet at least half of those facebook supporters are kids who thought "hey man, I like pot. I'll support this NORML group!"

/me coughs...

Anyway, support NORML. And remember, there's two different arms of NORML- NORML itself, which uses donated funds for lobbying, and the NORML Foundation, which goes to stuff like education about mj, media outreach, litigation and research.

I'm guessing the 14,000 are those who donate at at least the basic membership level of $25/year and those who donate monthly. I have also started making automatic monthly donations of $10 a month to NORML and MPP. It's a small price compared to other crap I spend money on.
