The Science of Medical Marijuana

THC, the main active ingredient in marijuana, produces effects that potentially can be useful for treating a variety of medical conditions. It is the main ingredient in an oral medication that is currently used to treat nausea in cancer chemotherapy patients and to stimulate appetite in patients with wasting due to AIDS. Scientists are continuing to investigate other potential medical uses for cannabinoids.74
Research is underway to examine the effects of smoked marijuana and extracts of marijuana on appetite stimulation, certain types of pain, and spasticity due to multiple sclerosis. However, the inconsistency of THC dosage in different marijuana samples poses a major hindrance to valid trials and to the safe and effective use of the drug. Moreover, the adverse effects of marijuana smoke on the respiratory system 4, 5, 6 will offset the helpfulness of smoked marijuana for some patients. Finally, little is known about the many chemicals besides THC that are in marijuana, or their possible deleterious impact on patients with medical conditions.

Now, under the SCHEDULE I system, Marijuana has zero medical value. Yet, on the very same website, NIDA sponsored and funded by the government, it states medical information about the plant.
WTF?
Isn't that uh... illegal?

If you read the article carefully, you will see that it talks about the medical uses of THC, not the medical uses of marijuana. THC has been a Schedule II substance for a long time. The federal drug control establishment's position is that a plant with a highly variable content of active ingredients and no way to establish a dosage is not medicine. Many medicines are plant-derived, but the plant itself is not considered to be medicine.

Actually, naturally occurring THC as made in marijuana is a Schedule I drug. You might be thinking of synthesized THC (As in the drug dronabinol), which was formerly a Schedule II drug but moved to Schedule III to allow patients to refill prescriptions.

They also don't mention that marinol is listed as the cause of death in 4 cases.another chalk up for big pharm,they are taking a plant that has killed no one,and killing people with it.

I have to agree with Bill,we do live in a stupid country,or at least,in a country run and ruled by idiots.
Casting pearls before swine is a fitting quotation when we send our emails with common sense and even sometimes wisdom,that is wasted because it
doesn't put money directly into their hands.
When we can afford to give House and Senate parties,vacation sites,world tours to inspect the amount of bat guano,then we too can have these idiots actually listen.

wrong. they are creating a synthesized form of THC. Marinol does not come from marijuana at ALL.

And they keep harping on the smoking of marijuana,when it is better when eaten.
Eating marijuana is the only true way of getting the full effect of all the cannabinoids
because smoking destroys most of them. Vaporizing also provides you with some of the
cannabinoids but I don't know if the lower heat damages some. But even with a vaporizer,you can't hold it in your lungs and absorb even half of what your using,and smoking you blow out even sooner. And as you get high,you don't hold as long on each toke. So if you burn a whole joint by yourself,you may be using 1/3 of the drug in the joint.
To avoid any of the possible heat damage by cooking your marijuana,grind up into dust and mix with your favorite peanut butter and jelly sandwich,about a grams worth of dank ought to rock your boat.
