So I've been smoking for about a year now, but just recently got into being politically motivated towards legalizing. My thought is that we are going about legalizing the right way but not in the correct method. Having debates and sending letters is great, but I think we need to get people to donate what they would spend on weed for a month to an organization that does advertisement and lobbying.

If we could get half the budget of tobacco lobbying or advertising we could probably have pot legal in just a few years. It is all about public image and weed still has a reefer madness image behind it. If we just told the truth and facts in a creative way that made people realize pot isn't as bad as people say it is, we could really get something done.

For example you could have a commercial of a family at a funeral. Narrator saying something about how he was a great student and was killed by a drunk driver. Then have the final screen be alcohol related deaths in 2008: x amount weed related deaths: 0 - then in bold letters Get the real facts. Or something along these lines. Sorry for the long post but I had to bounce it off some of you legalization veterans.

Marijuana is already is in the process of legalization, just a early stage, I see sometime next year legal in USA and in the next 5 years Australia and other countries.

I don't see how we can gather enough cash to out spend the industrial and banking lobbies that are against marijuana becoming illegal,big pharm for obvious reasons,gave over 29 million in the last election,and the banking industry (the people that launder the cartels money) gave over 475 million,some of which I am sure is too protect their income from laundering those billions in black market money. Isn't it amazing that with all our technology that the cartels can still move billions of dollars and not get caught? They do catch someone every once in awhile through money laundering schemes,but never the really big guys.

You sound pretty confident. Next year is only a couple of months away. I don't see it happening that quickly myself, but I really can't help but think it'll happen by about 2012. I'm just going by the way things roll with polls and what not. 44% of Americans currently agree that it should be outright legalized. I think they say that about 60% is needed to guarantee a win for legalization. I can't recall the reason why exactly, but it made sense at the time. I figure it'll take a few years yet to get to that percentage of support. Then again, how many people answer those polls as honestly as when they hit the voting booth? I'd bet most people already do want it legalized.

Or perhaps one day President Obama will fulfill the role Abe Lincoln once had when he freed the slaves of the nation. Our people want freedom. We're crying out. Maybe he will set us free?

It'll be legalized in California within a year but it'll take at least for it to become federal law, I think. I always wonder why there aren't more pro-weed commercials because anti-weed commercials just piss me off. Even high-fructose corn syrup has commercials in response to negative ad campaigns so why not us?

I've had a few ideas for commercials but here's just one:

Pan across a shot of a trashed back yard. A dog is chained up to a tree next to a broken down dog house and it's raining. The dog is violent looking and malnurished. The shot is faded back through a kitchen window and you see the owner of the house drinking alcohol, throwing plates on the ground, hitting his wife.

"Every year tens of thousands of people die from alcohol related incidents. While drinking alcohol many people become violent or negligent to their family members and friends. Meanwhile, 0 deaths occur from the use of Cannabis."

Pan across a similar looking dog. The owner has a joint in his mouth and is petting the dog saying "Who's a good boy, who's a good boy?"

"Where's the justice? Get the facts at iluvweeeeeeeeeeddddddddandi'mhigh.org"

The truth is though, most stations wouldn't allow pro-weed commercials to air. Maybe one day... Cheers

When you turn on your TV tonite,count the medicine commercials from 6 pm till 11 pm and ask yourself how many adds would we have too buy for them to take the chance of losing the pharmaceutical ads.

Im sorry to say that even if it is legal in California it isn't legal in California. In 2000 two women were arrested although they were allowed medicinal marijuana for seriously legitamite illnesses. And eventhough it is legal in California the federal government took it to the supreme court where they decided that national laws overrules state laws.

Doobiebrother - What better way of getting that 60% than by showing some pro-cannibis commercials on tv. Maybe attacking alcohol isn't the best strategy but there are people out there that could make a killer ad campaign. But no one has the money for that. We don't have to gather hundreds of millions of dollars, just a few hundred thousand would do for now.

I have seen that NORML ad, but i've never seen it on tv. They should try and get some air time.
