Arrow [UK] Councillor's comments on drugs sparks debate.

Local news for once. Woohoo. On all-round drug legalization, though, not just marijuana.

A senior councillor from Lincolnshire has come under fire after saying that drug possession should start to be legalised.

The mother of a 15-year-old girl from Lincoln who almost died after a suspected drugs overdose blasted county councillor John Marriott's comments as "rubbish".

Councillors, the city's MP, the Home Office and a senior lawyer have all lined up to attack his argument.

And even his own party – the Liberal Democrats – has said it does not agree with him.

The Hykeham Forum councillor's comments come after the Government's top drug advisor was sacked for claiming that alcohol and tobacco were more harmful than LSD, ecstasy and cannabis.

Cllr Marriott, an experienced local politician, said that many people would be "shocked" by his views.

But he thinks current drug laws have failed.

The mother of the teenage girl – who was on a life support machine earlier this year – said: "It's making it easier for people to get drugs.

"Those who get caught with drugs should be punished more, not less."

Hykeham Forum councillor John Marriott's commments on decriminalising drugs offences meets criticism from officials

Discuss.
Edit: Be sure to read some of the comments.

and why does marijuana have to be included here? You cannot OD on pot and pot doesn't put a person on life support.

Well, yeah. Yet he was sacked for saying it's less dangerous than alcohol. Absurd.

If you watch something on TV about marijuana here, it's hard not to hear the phrase "hardcore, potent, dangerous drug" though. Yet they never manage to elaborate...

It's unfortunate that this girl OD'd, however if drugs were legalized, taxed and regulated she wouldn't have had access to them in the first place!

you are half right. I am able to get alcohol and cigarettes without to much hassle and I am 16, but I can get weed easier tbh.

Basically you still have access to legal regulated drugs. BUT it would be harder.

And on another note the drug she OD'd has to be a hard drug, you cannot OD on pot etc, why would you want to legalize and regulate something like cocaine etc.

Yes you're right, though it's a big part of why many people believe drugs should be legal and regulated. While it will never completely eliminate underage people getting their hands on stuff, it would certainly be much harder. Like Judge Jim Gray always says, "Drug dealers don't ask for I.D."
