Default The major legalization organizations

Hi Everyone,

I'm fairly new to the the activism front, but am definitely hoping to aid the cause, be it financial or otherwise.

My question, why are there so many organizations working for the reformation of marijuana laws. a quick google search will yield literally hundreds of organizations, which gives me the impression that the movement is somewhat fractured, that funds are being wasted by being split between so many groups that are all working for the same objectives.

Why hasn't there been a push to "consolidate" the reformation organizations into a united movement. It seems if funds, manpower, and ideas can be brought together into one group, things would happen.

I'd love any input from anyone

These are the major ones:

National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws (NORML)

Marijuana Policy Project (MPP)

Drug Policy Alliance (DPA)

The Drug Policy Alliance differs from the other in that its agenda includes the legalization of all drugs.

The problem is not the division of effort. It's the lack of participation in any of them by 99% of the people who use marijuana. Americans spend $40,000,000,000 on pot and accessories every year. The major legalization organizations subsist on a total budget of $12,000,000 - $16,000,000 a year and most of that comes from a couple of billionaires. This is a propaganda war. How can we compete with the ONDCP, which spends $120,000,000 a year just on TV spots? If every marijuana user contributed 1% of their annual pot expenses they'd have $400,000,000 to work with and legalization would happen a whole lot sooner.

I believe a coalition would be a better term than consolidation. But I agree we will never advance our cause without effective organization. Do you just want to change the drug laws, or are you an advocate of Liberty? We need to take back all our rights not just one. Trying to fix the system one trampled right at a time is a futile effort. If there is anything that we should learn from the lack of victories of the fractionized front, it is that you can't change the system by playing by its rules.

The movement to legalize marijuana is not just a libertarian movement. We have allies that are conservative, liberal, libertarian, progressive, you name it. This movement has to include everyone. It is not partisan, it affects all sides of the political spectrum.

Ending marijuana prohibition would be a great step towards adults getting some personal liberty back. Join one of the organizations and contribute whatever you can afford, even if it is just $10.
