Do you realize we spend more money with enforcement and punishment than we make back in fines.... So the War on drugs, is not making the country money....Since when do wars make money(i realize they boost the economy....) i mean like actual money in pocket profit.... If the US really wants to make money, they would legalize it, sell it, and tax it.... | |

| I think legalizing marijuana would create a huge industry if it was totally legal. Let big tobacco get ahold on pot and you could see it all over america and the world. It would take next to no time to recalibrate the cigarette machines at the factories to make joints. Tobacco farmers could switch fairly easily to marijuana as the curing process for the two plants is similar. |

| I answered 15 years on the survey but It's really too complicated of a situation right now to say for sure. If you were *really* optimistic it could be within 10 years but on the same token maybe never. I was talking to a congressional intern after attending an undergraduate student government meeting at my school (I was there in support of the repeal of the drug provision of the higher education act. Students are losing federal financial aid for a crumb of marijuana. E-mail me if you want any info on this: badger@marijuana.com), and he was telling us the main problem with getting decriminalization bills through congress/state or local government is that supporting marijuana law reform still makes politicians look "soft on drugs." Also, supporting reform can cause major problems between a politician and his/her political party. However this situation can and hopefully will change if popular support for marijuana law reform increases. If the people speak out and refuse to vote for ignorant politicians it will make a difference. Basically the point I'm trying to make is show your support. Get active in NORML or similar organization in your area. Register to vote! You can only sign petitions if you're registered and every signature counts. | |

| I think the first step is not classifying marijuana as a drug. The only thing that makes it a drug is it is bought and sold illegallly. Test have proven time and time again that marijuana has no side effects or health hazard. Another step and I don't mean to affend any one is our president has to stop appointing Catholic Supreme Court Justices. |

Anyways this post was what resurrected the old thread and it has some major problems. The only thing that makes it a CRIME is that it is bought and sold (and grown) illegally. It SURELY is a drug. A drug is something that alters your consciousness. Marijuana DOES have side effects (I have experienced burnouts as bad as hangovers after eating very strong cookies, I was a level of retarded I cannot put into words for the entirety of the next day, and if you can stay awake through a bad oil burnout then good on ya). If we want real progress in marijuana and other issues that aren't at the forefront of the majority's minds (mostly dictated by the media of course, and not what issues are on individuals minds the most), then we MUST STOP volunteering away our right to self-determination through all our heinous everyday acts of capitalism, and our passive, apathetic support of democracy. Capitalism is a huge motivation to keeping marijuana criminal. The dealers and growers make more than they would if it was legal, and it supports a huge amount of police officers, jail guards, prosecutors, judges etc... Basically it's jobs for the system and they don't want to give this up. And guess who pays for it? Every one of us taxpayers with NO SAY in any matter, there is no 'power to the people' (when was the last time you were there at the meeting when they decided upon a law which affects you everyday?). It is an illusion of the bourgeois, perhaps their greatest in history, "DEMOCRACY." Until democracy and capitalism are toppled, every thing we recognize as a potential future problem will not be worked at being solved but rather the problem will get as bad as it can because somehow this method always makes more money within capitalism. And we won't revolt against capitalism and democracy until the whole world is under it's spell, most likely. So when do I predict marijuana will be legalized? After a civil war of the entire wolrd undoes the shackles and opens the cage door, and democracy and capitalism can stand no more. Our worthless (and oh-so convenient) domesticated lives will be changed forever, but no one will lock you up for pot. When do I think this will happen? Well anywhere from right now to 300 years from now, depending on how stupid people really are. Until then, deal with the fact that the system is corrupt and it is laid out to be corrupt. Sure we try to make our best choices for the system as a majority, but the ONLY foundation for these system choices and nuances is money. So we can try all we want, but the dollar IS democracy.
