That's a good question dedbr. I would rather it be flat out legalized like alcohol. Actually rather than alcohol.
In my opinion getting it legal for medicinal purposes won't do a thing for recreational. Just my opinion and I have know evidence to prove it and really I don't have any desire to try to prove it.
The only thing I can see that marijuana would have over other legal drugs is the lack or near lack of side effects, but I don't think that would have anything to do with it being legalized for recreational purposes.

But do we really want it legalized? When it is legalized the price will shoot up to 30 dollars a joint and such. I know it sounds greedy because some sick people really need it. but thats what will happen.

You brew your own beer, make your own wine, grow your own marijuana.

30 dollars a joint???........I don't think that would happen. If it was legal for medicinal purposes so it wouldn't have any thing to do with "some sick people need it". The sick people would get it and the healthy would still get it the way they are now.
Medical costs would probably be offset by name brand and generic brand.

I'd love to know how you figure that.

Things sold on the black market are always more expensive than equivalent legal goods. You're paying for the risk of production and distribution. If legal marijuana was more expensive than black market marijuana no one would buy it - they'd go to the black market which would continue to exist for just that reason.

My guesstimate would be an ounce price between $25 and $50, more than enough to cover production costs, distribution costs, dealer profit, and a generous tax. Cannabis is a weed much easier to grow than tobacco. The model to look at is the tax structures currently applied to alcohol and tobacco.

I think there could be an short term rise in price as Demand could outpace Supply. Right now, it seems to me that there are only home based growing and/or out in the woods. Nothing that could put out a consistant amount. I don't think it would take long to catch up. Try to put a number on how many people are educated in the ways of growing cannabis. I don't think I can, but that has to impact supply. I dont know for sure. Makes me think though. After it calms down, I too think the prices will be in the 20 - 50 range.

Was it a mistake to make or try to make marijuana into a legal medicine?
Well, the thing is, it is medicine (legal or not) and with all the many thousands of people worldwide who need relief from suffering there is no question in my mind that making marihuana legal for medicinal purposes has been one of the highlights (no pun intended) of the last decade.
Now I will have to say that I am speaking subjectively given that I have suffered from extreme back pain for almost 40 years. This since I took a bad fall on a construction site that almost killed me. Over the years Doctor after Doctor eagerly wrote out 'scripts' for narcotics to mitigate the pain. And, while these of course helped, they were highly addictive and rendered me into a zombie like state.
Marihuana turned out to be a godsend and I bless it every day for the help it has given and continues to provide and without the residual 'suck'. All these years of having to find and buy black market pot, continually putting my safety in jeopardy. What an incredible relief to be able to now purchase it legally. I've worked hard over the years at a grassroots (sorry) level along with many thousands of other sufferers worldwide to get where we are now. Please don't take that away -"a mile in someone else's shoes"...

Should it stay a recreational drug, or do you wholeheartedly agree with it as a medicine?
I support both unequivocally.

I think we've made a mistake involving drug regulations to our beloved herb.....my opinion......
I agree that we should not have to get the permission of the government or anyone else for that matter to use marihuana but I agree with Buzzby that the end will justify the means (to paraphrase). The medical marihuana lobby has already made huge strides toward a society that will, perhaps sooner than you think, not only legitimize marihuana as medicine but also for recreational use. By adults only that is

On top of that, if recreational users won't support medical users it tells the non-using public that marijuana isn't medicine. Who would know better than those familiar with it?
Thanks for that Buzzby - well put.
