Default BBC poll...

Thought it interesting to note that the latest BBC poll on whether marijuana should be legalized resulted in the following:

Do you think cannabis should be made legal?

Results so far:
Yes (17095 votes) 82.5%
No (3627 votes) 17.5%

Step by step...

It seems to me that the movement towards legalization is really picking up speed this year. I thought that it would take at least another 10 years to get there, but things are happening at an exponential rate. Shangra-la could be right around the corner.

Do you know anything about the methodology of this poll? In order to have any real meaning, it would have to come out of a randomized selection of people from a representative population. If it was a poll on a website, all it means is that marijuana legalization activists are passionate, organized, and bothered to vote, whereas most people are rather indifferent to the issue.

Gun rights organizations to which I belong often flood online polls by emailing the membership and asking them to go and vote. We sometimes hit 95% pro-gun in the polls, but it certainly doesn't indicate that 95% of voters feel that way.

Not other than it seemed to come from from anyone visiting a section of BBC's website devoted to discussing anything and everything having to do with cannabis including worldwide feedback vis-a-vie their 'message boards', ergo your, "In order to have any real meaning, it would have to come out of a randomized selection of people from a representative population."

How the BBC introduces "controls" re: their polling is not something I am privy to. I'm sure you could e-mail them a query in that regard.

Maybe, maybe not. Again, it depends on the "control".
That said, the poll results as of that date -

Do you think cannabis should be made legal?
Results so far:
Yes (17095 votes) 82.5%
No (3627 votes) 17.5%

and the poll results here on CT (talk about expected subjectivity!) -

Do you support the full legalization of Marijuana?
Yes (539 votes) 94.56%
No (31 votes) 5.44%

I don't know about you but after suffering the long march here
it sure as heck gives me a lift...
