If other drug dealers such as Anheuser Busch, Phillip Morris, Starbucks, Pfizer, Coca Cola can get their acts together and sell their products, why is NORML struggling to educate American businesses the benefits of opening markets via legalizing cannabis?

money money money money....MONEY!

It takes a lot of money to lobby, dollar signs, the green....no the other kind of green...
It isn't that NORML doesn't have their act together per say it's just....well...we need to get out there and educate people and have them donate for the cause.

IMO, everyone should take out at least 5 bucks and donate it every time they spend some on the green and we could have it legalized it no time

Go ahead, donate, you know you want to

Broliette, in respone to your message, please read today's article in The Wall Street Journal, "Media Industry Helped Drug Firms Fight Ad Restraints", page B1. Coporations must be better educated regarding their economic gains stemming from marijuana legalization. Sure, everyone contributing $5 is of value, but prohibtion has now lasted 70 years...big business can change events at a significantly rate. Who is contacting the various corporate sectors for financial support?

Broliette got it right: MONEY!

Two huge and deep-pocketed lobbies keep the legalization of marijuana from even being discussed: Pharmaceuticals and Alcohol. Legalization would most definitely have a negative impact on these businesses' bottom lines.

What industries would benefit from legalization? Other than the producers and distributors of weed and paraphernalia, the only ones I can think of are snack foods and obesity clinics. What industries would benefit from the legalization of industrial hemp? Several, but they don't compare in size or influence to Pharmaceuticals and Alcohol.

The efforts of the pro-legalization organizations are primarily directed at educating the general public and lobbying our representatives because as long as 2/3 of the electorate doesn't want to see marijuana legalized, it won't be.

It's easy to get the media industry to fight for one of its biggest money-makers. It would be a lot harder to get them to fight for something that might, some day, provide it with some income.

Would you care to educate me? You must have some in mind. So far I haven't heard anything of a practical nature except snack foods.

For the first half of that period, no one worked against it. NORML started up in 1970 and other pro-legalization organizations have sprouted up since. None of them have ever been adequately funded to do the job they set out to do. When the government spends a couple of hundred million dollars a year on negative propaganda, how can you counteract that propaganda with a budget of only a few million? If every marijuana user donated 1% of what he spends every year on weed and accessories, those groups would have $400,000,000 a year to fight prohibition. As it stands, the three major pro-legalization groups have a total budget of $18,000,000 a year and half of that comes from a handful of billionaire supporters.

The legalization of marijuana resulting in negatively impacting the alcohol and pharmaceutical industries is a myth. Consider you own behavior: When marijuana is legalized are you going to change your alcohol purchasing behavior? Are you going to have your prescription filled based on your doctor's advice?

Years ago, many experts said television would kill radio...the internet will abolish newspapers. Obviously, radio and newspapers exist and do not appear on the verge of extinction. The marketplace corrects itself and the broader spectrum of goods and services sold demand companies to operate more efficiently often resulting in companies realizing growth..

A range of companies will experience financial gains as a result of legalization such as media, retail, tourism, hospitality and the associated businesses supporting these major coporate sectors. The Mayor of Las Vegas has proposed to legalize cannabis ensuring the American tourist dollar stays in Las Vegas instead of Amsterdam. Of course, national TV networks, cable networks, print media, radio and internet websites would certainly want to invoice licensed cannabis merchants.

Snack foods included.
