Default Legalizing Marijuana Takes Money

It takes money to lobby, collect signatures, maintain a media presence, etc... Don't give all your money away, nobody should. In the long-run, you should work at managing your money by saving and investing. You are better off keeping the vast majority of your money, saving it, and earning more (I'm primarily talking to younger folks here). Give away what you can afford , a small amount, but larger as you become more successful. The important thing is to donate at regular intervals, at least once a year to help push reform through.

Donate to the MPP

Donate to NORML

This may seem like common sense, but it's important to point out that long-term is the key to success in this movement.

Contributing to the marijuana legalization movement might be the best investment you ever make.

When I got busted in 1970, it cost me $5,000 to avoid spending more than a month behind bars. That's around $20,000 in 2007 dollars.

I've been spending between $100 and $175 for an oz of weed for many years.

Putting a little money into legalization today might save you a ton of money in fines, court costs, and lawyers' fees sometime in the future. It will certainly save you a ton of money if you pay for your weed. I predict that after legalization, weed will cost 20% of what it does now on the black market.

5 star thread, effectively sums up the entire legalization forum imho. I've seen a lot of posts about the drug war failing, unjust laws, it's a natural plant etc... here's a chance to put your money where your mouth is. There are two links in my sig to donate to two major players in the legalization movement, there aren't any "packages", that is to say you don't have to donate a minimum, if all you can afford is a $1.75 they'll take it. If you don't plan on monthly donations just leave a comment for them not to send you monthly newsletters since they'll ultimately "overspend" your donation. Currently, this country has a better chance of legalizing marijuana that it ever has. We're poised for a change and all we need is one good push to get the process rolling.

That's one way to look at donating, but by investing I meant setting income aside that isn't needed and putting it into the market or bonds.. in other words have it work for you. Don't put all your eggs in one basket, diversify your investments and hedge yourselves. Reform money will come a lot easier that way.

Bottom line: Being financially successful and donating a small portion of it to reform in regular increments is more powerful than just dumping all your money into reform all at once and smoking pot. ANY amount of money once a year, we are talking as little as 5 bucks, is helpful. Patience is necessary in this effort. If you donate say 50 bucks and expect to see marijuana legalized from your one donation, wake up! Prepare yourself for the long run, a state-by-state battle all the way to DC. We all need to be on board.

I've set up regular donations with both NORML (National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws) and MPP (Marijuana Policy Project). Each month, NORML hits my credit card for $10. MPP does the same. It's painless that way and costs less than three fast-food lunches.
