In Australia teachers are drug tested as part of the initial interview with the school board, then not again...unless you start sgowing up with track marks or giggling uncontrolebly during staff meetings...

Probly the same in the US...

My place of employment drugs test once initially but after that only if your suspected can they give you another. But you could say if you wanted to work there and continue smoking you could. Just pass the drug test. I personally know two fellow employees, one that grows shrooms and another that smokes pot and bumps up before he comes in.

You can get medical card in California. They can't fire you for cannabis. America is a medieval country.

I can understand insurance company liability issues but I dont agree at all with preemployment drug testing as a result. It seems to me that it would be more beneficial to an insurance company only to test in the event of an accident. Reason being if I were to apply to a company that requires preemployment screening due to contractual agreements then I would fail and not be hired, unless of course I did not consume any illegal drugs in which case I would be hired and the company would have to pay for a second test in the event of an accident, which again I would pass (assuming that I weren't a stoner). If the same company did not drug test until there were an accident then I would fail at that time and the insurance company would not be liable for my treatment. So there would only be one test, and people who smoke would be just as likely to be hired as the non smoker(again assuming they are equally qualified). Preemployment screening costs companies money that they would not otherwise have to spend. It just seems to me that it would be more beneficial to both the insurance company and the hiring company to test only when necessary.
Some companies would prefer to not have a drug user working for them, reguardless of what the insurance policy says. It's up to the owner.

Might sound odd but safeway and walmart are good options. Around here atleast they just have the pre-employment screenings, screening when/if you get injured, and suspision. Safeway used mouth swabs though, not piss tests.

You are so wrong!

A medical marijuana card protects you from being prosecuted for possession or growing. It has nothing to do with employment. Employers can and do drug test and fire or not hire people who don't pass.

Companies aren't too worried about your hurting yourself. They're concerned about their liability if you hurt someone else. Pre-employment drug testing tries to screen out drug users, people who are more likely to cause accidents. If you hurt someone and it turns out that you were impaired, the lawsuits could run into the millions of dollars. Neither the company you work for nor their insurance company want to have to deal with that possibility.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I belive california passed a law preventing medical marijuana card holders from being discriminated against for jobs. I also remember an artical in high times about a guy in a law suit for the exact same thing.

But that is all I can remember right at the moment.

Nah, just the opposite in fact.

California Employers Not Required To Accommodate Medical Marijuana Users
