Default DEA stopping legislation coming...

If I missed where this has already been posted, feel free to close/delete/move this or whatever.

E-mail sent by the Libertarian Party HQ. Please contribute fax/phone call to the appropriate politician.

Wouldn't the passage of this just be grand?

Quote:
Full House to vote on measure to stop
federal medical marijuana raids

Dear Friends:

On Wednesday or Thursday of this week, the full U.S. House is scheduled
to take the most important vote on medical marijuana in five years.
This measure would effectively end federal medical marijuana raids --
and sources in the drug reform community say the vote is too close to
call!

Please read this action item and IMMEDIATELY send a fax or telephone
your congressional representative. Then pass this item along to a
friend and ask them to take action as well.

BACKGROUND: U.S. Reps. Maurice Hinchey (D-NY) and Dana Rohrabacher (R-
CA) are planning to propose a medical marijuana amendment to the
appropriations bill funding the Commerce, Justice, and State
departments.

This measure would prevent the DEA and the Justice Department
from spending any money to investigate or raid medical marijuana
patients and providers in states where medical marijuana is legal.
Thus, the legislation would effectively end these raids and let states
decide this issue for themselves.

The last time the full House voted on medical marijuana was in 1998,
and the measure failed, 311-94. Even then, the reformers managed to
get nearly half the 218 votes needed for passage.

But a lot has happened since then:

* Several more states, including Maryland, have legalized medical
marijuana.

* Polls show that up to 80 percent of the public supports medical
marijuana.

* Several potential presidential candidates, including Sen. John Kerry,
D-MA, have expressed support for the issue.

* Two recent House committee votes show that Democrats are almost
universally in favor of medical marijuana.

* Republicans are being actively lobbied by their colleagues who
support medical marijuana, such as Rep. Ron Paul of Texas and Rep. Dana
Rohrabacher of California.

That's why analysts at the Marijuana Policy Project and others say this
vote is too close to call.

Please act now: It's urgent that you tell your U.S. representative to
vote FOR the Hinchey/Rohrabacher amendment.

WHAT TO DO:

You can FAX your U.S. representative a pre-written letter from a web
site set up by the Marijuana Policy Project at
http://www.mpp.org/DefundDEA

The entire process takes only two minutes. After you enter your
address, you will see links to a selection of sample letters. Simply
choose a letter, edit it if you like, and click to fax it to your U.S.
representative.

We strongly encourage you to personalize your letter. (But make sure
that the letter clearly asks your U.S. representative to vote FOR the
Hinchey/Rohrabacher medical marijuana amendment to the Commerce-
Justice-State Appropriations bill on the House floor.)

You can PHONE your U.S. representative's office through the Capitol
switchboard. If you don't know the name of your U.S. representative,
you can give the switchboard operator your city or zip code and he or
she will connect you to your U.S. representative's office. The numbers:

(877) 762-8762 (toll-free)
(800) 648-3516 (toll-free)
(202) 225-3121
(202) 224-3121

WHAT TO SAY:

"Hi, my name is ____________, and I am a voter in your district.
I'm calling to ask Representative ______ to vote for the
Hinchey/Rohrabacher amendment to the Commerce-Justice-State
Appropriations bill. This amendment would stop the federal
government's raids on medical marijuana patients and providers in
California and the other eight states where medical marijuana is
legal."

Then forward this e-mail message to your friends and family and ask
them to fax or phone as well.

Thank you!

Thumbs up WONDERFUL thread Plains!

If this passes...it would probably be the biggest step towards legalization EVER!

To NOT have the feds breathing down the neck of every state that wants to decrim, would be awesome! It's time to get the DEA off our backs about this!

Thanx for the info man!

I think CKY means to ask, "why do recreational users want to decriminalize medical pot, even though it will still be illegal to use in the way that they use it?"

To answer, two points-

1) People are sick, and weed helps them. It's called empathy. Also, this removes alot of the stigma that weed currently has (courtesy of a long propoganda campaign) as a dangerous drug. If Grandma Mabel smokes it to help her arthritis, it will deffinatly soften the image of weed, moving decriminilization forward.

2) Weed will become much more available. Certain off topic drugs that have a medical purpose, but also a recreational one, are much more available to recreational users than they would be if they weren't legal to use medically. With the ability to move, store and sell weed legally, alot more weed would be produced, and increasing its availability to everyone.

Yes, it matters. Your State's Rep will be voting on this, which will be the first (to my knowledge) federal victory if passed.

I contacted my State Rep and I don't live in a Medical Marijuana state (yet).

Well said, WNB.
