| Everyone on here that wants to make a difference and try to boost the legalization efforts in this country, start e-mailing or sending letters to your representatives. It may not seem like much but imagine if everyone who smoked just sent a simple email saying "listen, im not happy with the current laws and as someone who is supposed to speak for the people i want you to change it." If representatives start getting a lot of emails like this they have no choice but to act. I may be naive in hoping this makes a difference but its really a google search and ten minutes of your time, it cant hurt right? Heres the email i sent to my governer, congressmen, and state representatives: "I am a concerned citizen wondering why Maine as a progressive state isn't doing more to end the prohibition on marijuana. Seeing as there has never been a reported death due to marijuana usage or overdosing it seems ludicrous to me that marijuana remains illegal while alcohol and tobacco are available in almost any corner store. As you can see from the website Drug War Facts: Annual Causes of Death in the United States , tobacco and alcohol cause on average 510,000 deaths PER YEAR, while marijuana has never been the direct cause of a single death. On another note, with the economy what it is today, why should we be spending so much money in taxes on a prohibition that is obviously not working and cannot work? Look at alcohol prohibition for example, an utter failure resulting in organized crime and mob rule costing the us fortunes to try and maintain the peace. Think of all the money being poured into this senseless prohibition, in the year 2006 829,625 people were arrested for marijuana related offenses. Approximately 89%, or 739,915 of those people were charged with possession only. Marijuana use is a non-violent crime that is costing the United States millions of dollars. With that said, think about the possibilities of the massive tax revenue legalized marijuana would create. Millions of dollars coming into the economy instead of out of it. Also if it were legal the government could regulate it and perform quality control measure such as used with tobacco and alcohol. Now I know what you might be thinking, "But legalization will lead to increased use, and then increased use by minors." Well that is just simply not true, look for example to Holland. There marijuana is legal to be purchased and used by adults over the age of 18 and marijuana usage by minors has not increased at all, and marijuana use by adults has only increased slightly. Another surprising note is that Holland also has lower marijuana usage by adults than the countries surrounding it where it is illegal. This seems to be contrary to the sentiment that legalization will lead to increased use. I thank you for taking the time to read what I have had to say and hope that maybe we can speak more about this subject. Seeing how your job is to speak for the people, and Mainers have already made it clear that marijuana is a viable medicine and that users should not be prosecuted, I would like to see you making more efforts in the legalization of marijuana, a harmless plant that is costing the country millions, and supporting a thriving black market. Thank You, Justin " Any feedback? |
