| I made a post about using marijuana to help with depression recently. I decided that I would give another shot with a combo therapy of antidepressants before I decide to give marijuana a shot. I started taking wellbutrin a little more than 2 weeks ago. I've been taking Paxil a week and a half ago. I'm combining these two drugs to deal with depression...which is common. Anyways, I know it takes sometimes a month for these things to work, and in the meantime I'm really listless and not motivated , and basically depressed. Not as depressed as I used to be, but still down. Do you think it would be okay to smoke a few times until the medicines kick in?? I really want to give medicines a chance on their own to see what they can do for me, but in the meantime I guess I want some relief until they kick in. Do you think the marijuana would delay the onset of the antidepressants to work?? By the way I smoked a few days ago, and I didn't get any bad effects from the mix...so I'm not worried about going crazy. I just don't know if I should completely stop smoking or toke up a few times until everything kicks in. Thanks, -soar |

| I don't know if that's such a good idea. Check the label. Probably won't say 'refrain from marijuana', but i would err on the side of caution, were I you.

| It really depends on what you want. My doctors ****ed around with meds for four years and it only made me more depressed (or manic). I've been on various combos of Paxil, Zoloft, Depakote, Risperdal, and Prozac and not one of them did a damn thing for me. When i started smoking, that was the first and only thing that ever helped to improve/stabalize my moods-which is why i think that clinical depression should be a criteria for medical mj prescription. Here's how i see it...most SSRIs and MAOIs take six weeks to work anyways. Besides that, there is no way that smoking will inhibit/delay/decrease the effects of the Wellbutrin...since both drugs are mood-enhancing, they can only have synergistic effects on your nervous system- i mean that the two can only work together, additively, to make your mood all that much better. Any effects you COULD see from the Wellbutrin alone will only be increased with the effects of smoking. But i'm biased because i don't believe in anti-depressants. I say go for it, smoke if it helps you feel any less miserable. life is too short to be waiting around for some prescription meds to "kick in."

| You should ask you're doctor, you don't have to worry about them telling you're parents because it's all confidential. and if you let him know you're smoking Marijuana he might even suggest that you keep smoking it and lower you're meds.

| Thanks for all the advice. I think I might try using a little bit if I feel REALLY down. Tonight I think I made it through the worst of it...I ended up going for a vigourous 30 minute run outside...and that helped. Sigh I can't wait till these antidepressants kick in and work. At least I HOPE they work! Paxil worked before, albeit it had side effects. So the wellbutrin is added to counteract these side effects. Only time will tell. -soar |

| If you're over 18, you should just ask your doctor.

| Let me just jump in for a moment with a couple of thoughts: 1. Marijuana acts as a short term (hour or two) euphorian -- spirit lifter -- and then diminishes. If you are currently ramping up on anti-depressants, the time frame for discovering if a particular antidepressant is effective can be from 2 weeks to 8 weeks depending on the anti depressant, your psychological problem and your particular body (weight, genetics, etc). By smoking while starting on a psychotrphic medication, which in fact antidepressants are, you are interacting with the effect of the antidepressant and it is extremely difficult to tell if the antidepressant is effective or not. My suggestion is to take a break from the marijuana for at least the first 2 or 3 weeks of beginning any anti-depressant regimen. Yes, you will feel pretty lousy...You should be seeing your psychological health care practitioner almost daily during these first few weeks, you should be able to report how you are feeling on a daily basis to some support group or health care program. That is the way in which this medication is supposed to be delivered and monitored. Regretfully, this is not always the case. 2. If you are under 18, your health records can be shared with your parents, you do not have a right to privacy. If you are a parent of a child under 18 who is in your care, you as a parent do not have complete privacy over your health care records if it can be shown to a court that the child in your care can be a "child in danger" under your care because you use illegal drugs. 3. Marijuana is in my personal estimation an excellent short term euphoric, and can in acute cases of depression provide great relief from suffering; however it is not the best treatment of many if not most depressive disorders. 4. There have been some findings where Wellbutrin (also known as Zyban) when combined with marijuana usage has caused short term pseudo-psychotic (out of control) episodes. Just my thoughts on the subject. Be well...take care of yourself and do take your medications. Hugz, Mama Budz | |

| Excellent, comprehensive advice. I'm on Depakote, Zoloft and Lamictal. I still smoke, and the psychiatrist knows (it is very important to tell them that you do) but does not approve of my usage. Peace E Conlige suspectos semper habitos |
