Default Young smokers..

I've been reading some studies stating that people who begin smoking marijuana before they reach about 17 when their brain stops developing do not turn out to be as intelligent as people who smoked later in life, or not at all..

Quote:
Individuals who started using marijuana at age 17 or younger performed significantly worse on the tests assessing verbal functions such as verbal IQ and memory of word lists than did those who started using marijuana later in life or who had used the drug sparingly. There were virtually no differences in test results among the individuals who started marijuana use after age 17 and the control subjects.
I'm somewhat worried, what do you guys think?

And yet I am not worried, I mean we only have one life, right? So why not live it not recklessly, but enjoyable.

Correlation != causation.

Overall, anyone can discretely fudge an experiment or study to make it say what they want it to say, and no one will be the wiser unless they're a scientist and spend time reviewing the actual procedure, which is oftentimes not presented with the 'findings' of the study. Thus, in evaluating studies, look at who conducted the study (medical groups are alot more credible than both pro and anti pot political groups, for example). Also, DO NOT fall into the common trap of assuming that just because X and Y show correlation, X causes Y or Y causes X-it is entirely possible that a third variable causes both X and Y, or that the relationship is purely coincidental.

Again, most studies about marijuana are a crock-they were conducted for political reasons, not to find scientific fact. Forget about them, as they're manipulative and missleading for the above reasons. This goes for alot of the pro-marijuana studies, too. The truth is that there is very little unbiased information about pot out there, and no one wants to give it to you.

I started smoking a little over two years ago.. I'm 17 now. My grades have improved since I started smoking. I don't know what this means or if it means anything at all. But, I haven't noticed any negative side effects concerning intelligence... unless I am intoxicated .

I started blazin at 13 but the stoners who just don't care about school and stuff usually have a pretty bad life in general not just smoking.

Whatever... I smoked my first joint when I was 11 years old, so I wouldn't really have any reference as to how it might've impaired my intelligence. Cognitive development is relative under any circumstances, so attaching any significance to something as neutral as marijuana use is rather moot, simply because one's interactions with it will be biased on as many relative levels as absolutely anything else in their life. I guess what I'm trying to say is that marijuana use depends on the person and thier respective environments/experiences, and thusly wouldn't have any more of an impact upon something such as intelligence than those environments/experiences themselves. Besides that, I have a feeling that there was quite a bit of availability bias occurring within this particular experiment...

Ok speaking from my own experiance and friendships, the friends of mine that started smoking in highschool did less after they graduated, and preformed at a lower level. The friends that started smoking in college however, seem to be more productive...graduating with degrees and begining professions.

I think that the age you start MAY be a real factor...but you can say anything with statistics. . .

85% percent of statistics are bull**** (including this one)

Statistics can be used to prove anything. 40 percent of all people know that.
